New Board Members Selected

03/22/2006

At its March 6, 2006 meeting, the Board for Student Publications selected four new members for the board: David Blomquist, Courtney Morales, Eugene Hartwig, and Leon Jaroff. Two members, Courtney Morales, Daily Business Manager '02, and David Blomquist, Daily Staff Writer '73, will fill three-year terms when incumbents Alan Lenhoff, Daily EIC '72, and Jane Myers, Michiganensian '60, complete their terms in April. Courtney is currently a commercial credit analyst at Comerica Bank in Detroit and David is the senior editor for technology and research at the Detroit Free Press, responsible for the overall editorial strategy and management of the newspaper's website.

Eugene Hartwig and Leon Jaroff will fill the unexpired terms of Phil Zaret and Catherine Niekro, respectively, who both submitted resignations this fiscal year. Hartwig, Daily Managing Editor '55, who will serve for two years, is of Counsel at Butzel Long. Earlier in his career, he was Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary for Kelly Services. Jaroff, Daily Managing Editor '50, will serve for one year. He is currently a contributor to Time magazine and a columnist for Time.com. He served on the board from 1990-1998, as well.

This year the board received an extraordinary twenty- seven applications from outstanding individuals. It was very challenging to limit the field to the ten applicants who were interviewed and even more difficult to narrow the candidates to the four who were selected.

Subsequent to the selection of the new board members, David Blomquist indicated that he was moving to New Jersey to take a new job and would not be able to serve on the board. Consequently, at its March 27, 2006, meeting the board chose Steve Kagan for the three-year term. Steve, Daily photograper in 1976, is currently a free-lance photographer in Chicago.

All of these names have been submitted to University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman for appointment. The new members filling unexpired terms can take office immediately, with members assuming full three-year terms taking office in May.
