Blue sweeps Showcase showdowns
DETROIT - The goal was nothing less than a sweep. Michigan hockey coach Red Berenson stated it. The Michigan hockey team stated it. Going into this weekend's College Hockey Showcase at the Joe Louis Arena, the sentiment around the team was the same.
Michigan eeks out win over Vikings
CLEVELAND - Plundering. Back in the days when vikings terrorized the known world, that was what they set out to do. And indeed, the latter-day Vikings of Cleveland State set out to do much the same Saturday night. As things turned out, it was all the Michigan men's basketball team could do to keep the Vikings from plundering the Wolverines' No. 7 ranking.
'M' doesn't look like a No. 7 team
CLEVELAND - One thing became quite clear after Michigan's 80-74 win over Cleveland State, Saturday. Michigan is not the seventh-best team in the country. Both major polls had the Wolverines rated as high before Saturday's squeaker against the Vikings.
Setting the Table
Number one. Linnea Mendoza wears No. 1 on the back of her jersey, which is appropriate when you consider what she has accomplished over the past three years. The junior setter for the Michigan women's volleyball team entered the season with the Michigan record for most assists in a match (73, accomplished three times), the highest assist total in a season (1,478 last year), and the most assists in a conference season (917 last year).
Offensive spurts lead to records
DETROIT - The organizers of the College Hockey Showcase hoped for a successful weekend for all four teams competing in it. And it was Michigan which left smiling the most.
Women cagers scare No. 1 Stanford
The unranked and unheralded Michigan women's basketball team came within seconds of pulling off an upset of epic proportions last night in Hawaii, losing, 77-74, to top-ranked Stanford in the finals of the Hawaiian Air Wahine Classic.
'M' volleyball ends year by winning last four matches
Not a bad way to end a season - four straight victories to steal sixth place in the Big Ten.
The Michigan women's volleyball team defeated Illinois and Iowa over the weekend to close the season at 14-17 overall and 9-11 in the conference.
