John Greenburg, an LSA senior, gives ashes yesterday during Ash Wednesday mass at St. Mary's Student Parish. The sign of the cross is already on his forehead. The ashes prepared from the palms blessed on Palm Sunday the previous year, symbolizing penitence and mourning. As the ashes are placed on the head, the priest says, "Remember, man, that thou art dust, and unto dust thou shalt return." Ash Wednesday is the start of the Christian holiday Lent, which is the season to repent for sins. Many Catholics during this period sacrafice something in their lives to symbolize the sacrafice of Jesus.
