  • Pedestrian mall was mishandled

    TO THE DAILY:

The article "East U to become pedestrian mall" (2/26/96) shows how the University is run by fools. Do other people see why asking the School of Natural Resources and Enviornment's Landscape Architecture Department for their input would have been intelligent, for two reasons? One: The final product will be in their back yard. Two: I cannot imagine a department within the University that is more qualified to comment on this project.

This is a clear case of stupidity by the University administration. How much longer is it going to continue? When is the University going to divorce itself from mindless bureaucrats and illogical administration? The pedestrian mall is a good idea, but excluding the SNRE from participating in the planning stages is a joke. This is just one of many cases where the people who make important decisions are not the same people who must live with those decisions. I applaud Prof. Bob Grese and others who speak out against the oppressive University administration.

During the Middle Ages, universities were groups of people who gathered to share ideas and skills. These groups moved frequently in search of better living standards. Today, we seem to be slaves to one location, and to a group of people -- the administration -- who are not directly involved in education. Are we better off today?
