Women's track wins at KalamazooBy James GoldsteinDaily Sports Editor That blur that just went by was the Michigan womenÕs track and field team blasting past its opponents. The Wolverines captured the Western Michigan Invitational team title this past Sunday at Kanley Track. Michigan posted 146 points with no other opponent even close to competing with the Wolverines. Purdue finished second (104) and host Western Michigan was one point behind the Boiler-makers for third place. Michigan freshman Nicole Forrester won the high jump title, setting a track record with a 6.0-foot effort. Fellow freshman Nikki Keith was victorious in the shot put, throwing 45.10 feet, and senior All American Courtney Babcock won the 1500-meter run in 4:32.14. Senior Tania Longe turned in a first place performance in the 100-meter hurdles (14:42) at Kalamazoo, and also captured the the long jump title.
Men's trackHost Western Michigan cruised to victory in the Central Collegiate Championships, while Eastern Michigan finished in second (175.5) and Michigan State third (97). Michigan placed eighth out of 10 teams with 36.5 points and no wins. The Wolverines' best finish in an event was junior Alex Lengemann's fourth-place result in the decathlon. Lengemann had 6466 points.
Women's golfThe Wolverines' top performance came from Wendy Westfall and Freshman of the Year Katy Loy, who tied for tenth. Besides the accolades given to Loy and McDonald after the tournament, Michigan coach Kathy Teichert was named as co-Big Ten Coach of the Year with Indiana's Sam Carmichael.
