Child care faces regent vote

After a year of wading through red tape, working with administrators and formulating a plan, the University may soon become a more kid-friendly place.

Awareness week battles alcohol myths, temptations

A 1993 survey of University students, faculty and staff found that close to three-fourths of the respondents had poured themselves an alcoholic drink in the last 30 days. The survey, conducted by the University Substance Abuse Research Center and funded by the Michigan Department of Public Health, also found that 64 percent of males and 58 percent of females drink at least once a week.

MSA predicts low turnout for elections

"I've seen posters around and know about the elections but I really don't know any of the candidates," the LSA sophomore said. "I haven't put forth the effort to get to know them and no one has come to me."

'U' plans to add new officer for medical affairs

In an effort to deal with the wave of fiscal challenges plaguing the University Medical Center, the Board of Regents is expected to approve the formation of a new executive officer position today.

As part of the national post-election analysis, the University's School of Public Policy is scheduled to host a panel discussion today on "Election '96: How it happened and where do we go from here?" at 5 p.m. in the Michigan League.

Muslim lifestyle speech closes week of awareness

Kamran Bajwa had the opportunity to speak out in his classroom today. In fact, he got to speak for more than two hours. Bajwa, a first-year Law student, closed Islam Awareness Week last night by speaking to 70 people on the topic "Islam: the complete way of life."

Group vows to fight for assisted suicide vote

"Now is the time for the Legislature to assume responsibility," said Rep. Jan Dolan (R-Farmington Hills).
"It (assisted suicide) is happening now. It will continue to happen," said Rep. Ted Wallace (D-Detroit). "This is no longer partisan."

Shakur murder witness killed

Yafeu Fula, 19, was shot once in the head and found slumped in a third-floor hallway of a housing project in Orange, N.J., early Sunday.
Fula was a member of Shakur's backup group, the Outlaws Immortalz, and was sitting with bodyguards in the car behind Shakur's when the rapper was shot on Sept. 7 in Las Vegas.
