Bumbling 'M' stumbles to loss

Perhaps the most telling play for the Michigan football team Saturday was the opening kickoff. The Wolverines' Tyrone Butterfield caught the kick at the one-yard line, stumbled, and fell at the two. For Michigan, the rest of the day went the same way.

Wolverines need to be more than Michigan

William Carr didn't look. He couldn't look. It was just too painful to watch. There, at the end of the bench, where he sat with his face buried in his powerful hands, he could only hear defeat. Boos from his own fans. Cheers of "PENN STATE! PENN STATE!" that were much too loud. Sobs from his fellow big, tough linemen. Silence from the sideline.

Icers coast past Spartans, 5-1, tie Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN - It had to be Madden-ing for Bowling Green. The Falcons were in control of the game on their home ice Saturday night. They had been ever since the end of the second period, and they couldn't have thought they would wind up with a 3-3 tie. But that's what happened.

Desmond Howard: The one-time Heisman trophy winner discusses post-Michigan life in the NFL

No Michigan football fan will ever forget the catch. As the entire crowd of maize and blue faithful held its breath, quarterback Elvis Grbac unexpectedly dropped back to pass on fourth down and inches. With one heave of his arm, the ball spiraled toward the goal line. And with his entire body sprawled out parallel to the ground, Desmond Howard made the diving catch in the end zone to ice the 27 -24 victory over Notre Dame in 1991.

No matter what, Ohio State-Michigan matters

When Gary Moeller was coach at Michigan, he used to say that the Wolverines' biggest rival was Michigan State. He was dead wrong. Because Michigan has no rival bigger than Ohio State. Sure, Michigan-Michigan State is for state bragging rights and the advantage in in-state recruiting.

Every coach preaches it. Turnovers - you can't make them and still expect to win.

Special teams doom Wolverines in loss: Michigan has one punt blocked and returned for touchdown, returns punts poorly

It's safe to say that Michigan coach Lloyd Carr has a bit of an opinion on his team's kicking game Saturday against Penn State. "We were totally inept in that phase of the game," Carr said. "You take the kicking part out of it, and we have a great chance to win."

Ohio State finally smells roses

Matt Finkes returned a fumble 45 yards for the tie-breaking touchdown with 6:18 left and the Buckeyes beat Indiana, 27-17, Saturday to clinch their first Rose Bowl berth in 12 years. With the game tied, 10-10, the Buckeyes' fortunes turned when the Hoosiers' Jay Rodgers, scrambling for a first down, was stripped of the ball by linebacker Andy Katzenmoyer. Finkes grabbed the ball in the air and ran untouched into the end zone, putting Ohio State ahead, 17-10.
