Parties take hit in MSA rep. elections

Going into the Michigan Student Assembly elections last week, many candidates and assembly members thought this term would be dominated by strong party showings. They were wrong.

Students pass $1 fee increase

Only a small percentage of the student body voted in last week's Michigan Student Assembly elections - but those who did cast votes favoring an increase of $1 to the current $2.69 per-term student fee for every student on campus. The increase, which must go before the University Board of Regents for approval, would be effective next fall.

'M' underdogs stun OSU

In the end, it just didn't matter. It didn't matter that Ohio State was No. 2 in the nation. It didn't matter that the Buckeyes were undefeated. Or that they had already locked up a Rose Bowl berth. Or even that the Michigan-Ohio State game was in Columbus.

HIV testing may soon be mandatory for pregnant women in Michigan

"There will be a civil libertarian argument against it," said state Sen. Joe Schwarz (R-Battle Creek), a doctor. "But from the standpoint of proper epidemiology and public health policy, it should be required."
Dozens of Michigan babies are born each year with the virus that causes AIDS. Medical experts say 25 percent to 33 percent of all babies born to HIV-infected moms will develop the virus.
