Bucked Again

No one thought it could be done. A Michigan victory over Ohio State? Impossible. After all, the Buckeyes were 17 1/2 point favorites in Columbus over a Michigan team that had the pulse of a mummy in its two most recent games - losses to both Penn State and Purdue. So what happened? The No. 21 Wolverines scored 13 unanswered points to shock the second-ranked and previously unbeaten Buckeyes, 13-9, in front of a stunned crowd of 94,676 at Ohio Stadium.

Herr, 'M' icers sweep Brown

"Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard." That was Michigan right wing Bill Muckalt referring to a hard-working, smaller Brown team that stuck with the talented Michigan hockey team for much of Friday night's game at Yost Ice Arena.

Down and Out

If you look through box scores from recent Michigan men's basketball seasons, it's easy to find big names and great achievement. Chris Webber. Juwan Howard. Jalen Rose, Glenn Rice. National title games. And a national championship.

As usual, Wolverines win the big game

COLUMBUS - Amidst the stunned silence and dumfounded looks, the two kids from Ohio found each other. One, Charles Woodson, from Freemont, Ohio, had nine tackles on the day, and led the Michigan secondary in its biggest minute of the regular season, the final one.

'M' men's tankers dunk No. 1 Texas

If the top-ranked Texas men's swimming and diving team had been smart, it would have taken the first flight home from Ann Arbor after the thrashing it received in Friday night's exhibition meet. Unfortunately for the 1996 NCAA champions, they decided to stick around for the real meet Saturday and were defeated by No. 4 Michigan, 129-114.

'M' spikers grab weekend sweep

The Michigan women's volleyball team knows that it has to win its last four matches of the season. After the performances this past weekend, the Wolverines are half way there.

Cooper gets another lesson in futility

COLUMBUS - If you're Ohio State coach John Cooper, you have to look for positives. Sure, his record against Michigan fell to 1-7-1 with Saturday's 13-9 loss, but there really isn't much to do in Columbus anyway, so it won't be a problem that he can't go out in public for the next year.

Buckeyes' poor performance hurts Pace's Heisman shot

COLUMBUS - So much for that Heisman talk. Much had been made about Ohio State tackle Orlando Pace's bid to become the first lineman to ever win the Heisman trophy. His coach, John Cooper has said all season that Pace should win it.

Arizona State, Florida State remain unbeaten

Terry Battle made sure his quarterback had an easy night against Arizona, rushing for 143 yards and three first-half touchdowns as the No. 4 Sun Devils finished the regular season undefeated and retained their shot at a national championship with a 56-14 rout. Plummer, who engineered come-from-behind victories over Washington, UCLA and Southern California, spent most of the night handing off to Battle and Jeff Paulk but still threw for 201 yards and three touchdowns.

Iowa pummels Minnesota to stay in hunt for Outback berth

Retiring after a 37-year coaching career, Wacker watched his team rally from a 17-point deficit to tie No. 24 Iowa before collapsing in a 1:55 span of the third quarter on the way to a 43-24 loss Saturday night. Sedrick Shaw and Tim Dwight scored two touchdowns apiece, and the Hawkeyes (6-2 Big Ten, 8-3 overall), heading to a bowl game for the 12th time in the past 14 seasons, scored 26 straight points after blowing their big lead.

'M' role players notch firsts

There are firsts for everything. It just so happened that Michigan accomplished many of its firsts Saturday night against Brown.

Morrison's presence is enough

Being pegged as the preseason Hobey Baker favorite hasn't done Brendan Morrison any favors. The Michigan center is known around the country as the best player on the nation's best team - so if there's one player for opponents to gear up for, he's the man.

Blue women's cagers capture weekend tourney

KALAMAZOO - The Michigan women's basketball team ran away with a pair of victories and the title at the Western Michigan University Tournament over the weekend. Literally.

Blue tankers remain undefeated

While the Ohio State football team couldn't live up to its No. 2 ranking this weekend, there was at least another second-ranked team that successfully retained its position in the polls. The Michigan women's swimming and diving team pulled out a tough, 178-118 victory at No. 24 Penn State on Friday.

'M' grapplers face highs and lows at Open

The No. 10 Michigan wrestling team left the Michigan Open in East Lansing yesterday with mixed emotions of its performance. The Open was the first of the year, and acted as an indicator of the season to come. "I was fairly pleased with our performance," Michigan coach Dale Bahr said. "There were many bright spots, but there were also many areas where we know we need improvement."
