Weekend, etc.

Tap into microbrews

How often do you walk into a party, get handed a lukewarm can of Milwaukee's Best and graciously accept the offer? Perhaps this occurs on too many occasions, and we become immune to the horrific taste of much of many of America's most popular beers.

'Wheel of Fortune Live' comes to the Palace

Forget watching some stranger on television buy a vowel, solve the puzzle, go bankrupt and spin that wheel. No longer do you have to wonder why all these losers are winning money and free trips for two to Cancun and Hawaii, while you are sitting home alone with a bag of chips and remote in hand.

Van Halen in balance without pompous Roth

What is there to say about Van Halen, other than that they suck? Honestly, though, I can be fair. As a music reviewer and a reporter, I've learned how to look at things objectively. Instead of simply saying, "Van Halen sucks," I could explain why Van Halen sucks, or how bad they suck.

Clinton doles no attacks

Ahem. I am about to say a very naughty word. Please do not let your younger siblings, children or squeamish Republicans read on any further.

Two generations cut hair at historic Dascola Barbershop

It's hard to find an old-fashioned barbershop these days. If you look closely, though, you will find the Dascola barbershop, located on Liberty Street. It's been around since 1939, when brothers Dominic and Ernest Dascola decided to open up their own barbershop. It was only natural that they would enter the barbering profession - after all, their father Antonio, an Italian immigrant, also cut hair, as did their eldest brother Patsy.

New teen-age R&B group, Mista, releases first record

It could just as easily have been a phone conversation with my younger, teen-aged cousin, Brandon. Only the Brandon I was talking to wasn't my cousin. He looks nothing like my cousin. He's a native of Atlanta, not Little Rock. And he - unlike my cousin - is a member of Mista, the newest teen R&B quartet out right now.

Film prof. writes 'Mighty Ducks 3'

If you've ever wondered what it's like to be a screenwriter, Jim Burnstein is the man you want to talk to. Burnstein, a professor in the University's department of film and video studies, has been writing for most of his adult life and knows the highs and lows of the profession.

Basement Arts promises fine season

The smell of blood permeating campus this week probably does not come from the beginning of hunting season or a particularly rough football practice. The scent most likely flows from the Frieze Building, where Basement Arts has just begun its fall season. "You go in there you tear yourself open, and you bleed for a few days and then you are done. It is just a wonderful experience," said Basement Arts' Co-Artistic / Managing Director and BFA Performance junior Ed Lewis.

'Pamela' opens 'U' theater season in carnival style

With a festive and celebratory fervor, the University department of theater and Drama opens its '96-'97 season with the first English rendition of Carlo Goldoni's historic play, "Pamela." Directed by internationally renowned University faculty member John Russell Brown, this production promises to be one of University Productions' most ambitious and intriguing ventures yet.

Diverse, world-class performances slated for University Productions

After a busy week of last-minute set changes, costume checks and frantic dress rehearsals, University Productions will be celebrating the start of the 1996-97 drama season with the exciting carnival atmosphere of Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni's "Pamela."

Farmer's Market displays state's wares from produce to clothes

Ann Arbor's Farmer's Market, waiting to be discovered by University students, was a source of delight to Ann Arbor residents even 100 years ago. Nowadays, it has become a necessity for many. Carla Slebodnick, an Ann Arbor resident, said, "It's nice to see all the farmers and buy the vegetables directly in season. It can't get any better in the grocery."

Energetic student rides for equestrian team

Like many University students, Briana Becker has a lot of interests outside of her normal studies, but the 20-year-old LSA junior's activities are not the everyday type. In addition to working on an English major and preparing for law school, Becker spends most of her leisure time riding and competing for the University's equestrian team.
