Shut Out!

It would have been difficult for the Michigan field hockey team to underestimate the importance of its game against Central Michigan yesterday, at Ocker Field.<2p> After disappointing losses to Iowa and Northwestern this past weekend, the Wolverines (1-4 Big Ten, 6-6 overall) desperately needed a victory to bounce back.

Another 8-4 year? It doesn't have to be

A single loss should not ruin anybody's season. But for Michigan, it often does.
In fact, you could make the case that the Wolverines were never the same after their first loss in each of the past three seasons. Each of those first losses sent Michigan into tailspins that eventually became four-loss seasons.

Keady, Herrick looking to get over engine trouble

LOS ANGELES - (AP) UCLA basketball coach Jim Harrick has reportedly been cleared of violating NCAA rules in the sale of a car he owned to the sister of a top recruit.
Neither the Pacific-10 nor UCLA would comment yesterday on reports that a conference investigation had not turned up any wrongdoing by the Bruins coach.

NCAA apologizes to Alabama professor, dodges law suit

Committee chair David Swank issued the retraction and apology to Prof. Tom Jones during a teleconference from NCAA headquarters in Overland Park, Kan.
He said he believed a retraction and admission of such a major mistake was unprecedented for the committee.
