As seniors embark on a quest for their dream career, one University office is ready to help make that dream a reality.

Career Planning & Placement, a division of Student Affairs, offers a vast array of services and expertise to assist graduating seniors in their job search - from helping students write their resumes to scheduling interviews with major companies.

"We have services to help students make all kinds of decisions," said Debbie Taylor, an assistant director of CP&P.

From walk-in advising to a visit online, CP&P's services are readily accessible - even to a student with the most demanding schedule.

"The career library is one of our best resources - it's even maintained by a librarian," Taylor said.

Terri LaMarco, an associate director of CP&P, also spoke highly of the center's resources.

"Whether a student is thinking about graduate school or a full-time internship after graduation, the library has a vast array of material for students to take advantage of," LaMarco said.

Since commencing the job search is a big step, CP&P invites students to visit the office for a quick tour and welcome from the staff.

"Equally as important as the library, I think, is the staff," LaMarco said. "We provide individual counseling appointments, and walk-in service for quick questions."

While students may feel overwhelmed by the thought of planning life after college, CP&P staff members offer timely assistance along with a smile.

"I come here a lot," said LSA senior Heather Sims, who was recently preparing her personal statement for application to medical school. "They're very helpful."

"I've been able to look at photocopies of personal statements, and see how others have written them."

Located on the third level of the Student Activities Building, CP&P is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and until 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday.

LaMarco encourages students to get a head start - by a few months or a couple years.

"Our services are for students from all academic levels," LaMarco said. "Seniors should get an early start now. Employers are already hiring students graduating in May."

"(CP&P) can tell you what you need to stand out," Sims said.

Students wishing to utilize any of CP&P's services can walk in or call 764-7460 for an appointment.
