Little Brown Jugular

MINNEAPOLIS - For most Michigan teams, a victory over Minnesota isn't reason for celebration. After all, the Wolverines haven't lost to the Golden Gophers since 1986 and have kept the Little Brown Jug in Ann Arbor for 10 straight years. But the 44-10 pounding of the Gophers on Saturday was exciting for the Wolverines in at least three respects.

Not much in the way to stop Bowens

MINNEAPOLIS - Three times David Bowens stood above Cory Sauter, glaring down, grunting, and nodding his head slowly as if to say that, yes, this was fun. Three times Bowens broke through the Minnesota line, straining and pushing until - BOOM! - he made the hit. Three times Bowens sacked the quarterback, doing what William Carr had told him to do so many times.

Sinking Scholar Ships

The day classes began for the fall quarter at UCLA, Rosco Zamano and his UCLA teammates hopped on a plane to travel to Ann Arbor for a football game. Having played two previous games, Zamano, a freshman, had already spent more time on the football field than in the classroom.

'M' Icers give Fairbanks the cold shoulder

The flight to Fairbanks took 12 hours, the temperatures were below zero, Michigan coach Red Berenson got sick, the ice was too large and the biggest tourist attraction was a bus trip to the Pipeline. It's a good thing the Michigan hockey team won two games this weekend against Alaska-Fairbanks, because if it hadn't, this might have been the last trip to Alaska for a long, long time.

Offense finally comes through for 'M' in big way

MINNEAPOLIS - For Michigan football coach Lloyd Carr, it had almost become an obsession. The big play. Why was it missing? Where had it gone? Why had Michigan's offense had such trouble breaking it in the past two games?

Jury still out on Dreisbach after victory over Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS - In terms of his quarterback situation, Michigan coach Lloyd Carr has been quite sensitive all season. He has been sensitive about sophomore Scott Dreisbach's shortcomings, and he has been sensitive about criticism against Dreisbach. Saturday against Minnesota, Carr may have taken steps to smooth out both by limiting Dreisbach's pass attempts.

'M' goes for late TD pass

MINNEAPOLIS - Lloyd Carr has been guilty of a lot of things while being Michigan football coach. He has been guilty of being too conservative. He has been guilty of poor play calling. And he has often been guilty of not smiling enough.

Michigan State whips Wisconsin, ready for trip to Michigan Stadium

EAST LANSING (AP) - It was billed as a battle between the Big Ten's two best true freshmen running backs. Instead, it became a showcase for the Michigan State defense. The Spartans, with Dimitrius Underwood getting two sacks, held Wisconsin to just 55 yards in the second half Saturday and Michigan State defeated the Badgers, 30-13, for its third straight victory.

Illinois latest team to blow lead against Wildcats

EVANSTON (AP) - Adrian Autry, starting for injured Darnell Autry, scored on a one-yard run with 1:02 left Saturday, and No. 11 Northwestern continued its string of remarkable last-minute finishes, rallying past Illinois, 27-24. The Wildcats (5-0 Big Ten, 7-1 overall) won their 13th straight Big Ten game over two seasons, a come-from-behind victory that all but guaranteed a second straight bowl bid for the defending conference champions.

Big Ten ponders post-season play

ROSEMONT, Ill. - March Madness, Big Ten style? The possibility of a Big Ten postseason basketball tournament had coaches and players alike abuzz at the conference's annual media day yesterday.

For first time in 3 games, 3 is a charm for 'M' field hockey in 3-2 upset of Ohio State

After its past three matches, the Michigan field hockey team must think that three is the key to victory. Against No. 19 Penn State on Friday, three goals would have been enough to win if the matches were only half as long, as the Wolverines and the Lady Lions were deadlocked, 2-2, after one half of play.

Top runners sit out for women's harriers

Ideally, the Michigan women's cross country team would like to be hitting its stride going into Saturday's Big Ten championship. Instead, the Wolverines had two sub-par races in a row and are desperate to find the form that they began the season with so impressively.

At last, Michigan truly a home for Flaherty

As a freshman, Debbie Flaherty had some pretty strong feelings about Michigan."I absolutely hated it," she said. "I didn't feel any connection to the school or to anybody here. I mean, when I played, I wasn't sure what I was playing for." That's not exactly true. Flaherty knew for whom she was playing. It's just that she really wasn't into it. You see, she didn't take much pride in being a Wolverine.

'M' soccer shells fill-in Dayton goalkeeper on way to 3-0 win

The Michigan Wolverines may not consider themselves to be particularly religious.
But Sunday afternoon, the Michigan women's soccer team gave Dayton goalie Tiffany King a baptism by fire in the form of a 26-shot, three-goal outburst.

Spikers can't climb out of 8th

The weekend wasn't supposed to end like this. Not for the Michigan women's volleyball team. On Friday, it was hard for the Wolverines not to expect two victories. They were fortunate to come away with one.

'M' crew takes 2nd behind Buckeyes

The cold and rain in Columbus couldn't keep the Michigan's women's crew team from putting on an impressive showing Saturday, as the Wolverines competed in both the novice and open eight in the Jack Speakman Regatta. The three Michigan boats that were entered in the novice eight fared well as they took second, fourth and 13th. The second-place boat finished 17 seconds behind Ohio State.

'Basically, it was just ridiculously cold'

No trip to Alaska would be complete without a little sightseeing. And in between practice and games, the Michigan hockey team had some time to kill during its trip to Alaska over the weekend. So the Wolverines hopped on the team bus and went off to see the tourist attraction of tourist attractions: the Alaska Pipeline.

Cyganiak, Moon fall to second seed in quarters

Upset after a third-round loss in the single consolation bracket at the Riviera Women's All-American Tennis Championship in Pacific Palisades, Calif., Sarah Cyganiak still had one more shot. Later in the afternoon, the senior teamed up with junior Sora Moor to win their first match of the main draw doubles competition.

Torre leads Yanks to title team up to bring Yanks world title

NEW YORK (AP) - The bullpen was exceptional, as expected. Jim Leyritz delivered a big home run, Andy Pettitte threw a marvelous game and Paul O'Neill made a nifty catch. The New York Yankees had it all - pitching, hitting and fielding in one of the finest weeks in their history.
