New 'U' pres. may be named next week
The next University president may be chosen in less than a week.
The Board of Regents met privately yesterday and decided to begin publicly discussing finalists Nov. 5.
Candidates for regent debate 'U' concerns
Four candidates for the University Board of Regents met last night under the shadow of recent developments in the presidential search - a subject that led off more than an hour of discussion.
Gathering in the Michigan League, Regent Deane Baker (R-Ann Arbor), Republican Mike Bishop and Democrats Olivia Maynard and S. Martin Taylor discussed issues facing the University. The meeting was moderated by Michigan Student Assembly members, and about 25 students were in attendance.
Student may have falsied research
The University found its scientific integrity questioned yesterday when it was revealed that a junior scientist had falsified research in five major genetics projects.
The junior scientist worked on various studies with Dr. Francis Collins, a former professor of human genetics at the University and the current head of the National Center for Human Genome Research.

Survivors share stories of rape, assault in 10th 'Speak Out'
The warm glow of two candles set the stage for the 10th annual "Speak Out," last night in the Michigan Union ballroom. After two hours of sharing stories about sexual abuse and the road to recovery, one candle was left glowing and many of the 250 attendees left feeling overwhelmed.
"I thought it was pretty amazing to hear all the strength coming from the women and men who spoke tonight," said Ruchi Mishra, an LSA first-year student. "If everyone had the courage to speak out against sexual assault, it would be one way we can fight it."
Volunteers mobilize on week of Devil's Night
DETROIT (AP) - Remembering the fires and crime that marked Devil's Night in 1990, Detroit resident Ida Cummins plans to spend the two nights before Halloween this year guarding the vacant apartment building behind her house.
"They won't get it as long as I'm breathing," Cummins said as she demonstrated how she would sit at her kitchen window to watch the building.
Controversial sex ed curriculum may lead to Fenton School Board recall
FENTON, Mich. (AP) - Some parents are upset that the Fenton Board of Education has reaffirmed its plans for a sexual education curriculum that include instructions on condom use.
About 100 people attended a board meeting Monday where the "Healthy Students 2000" curriculum was discussed. Opponents called it "filthy" and "obscene," while proponents said it was "necessary" and "lifesaving."
Police expose nationwide exam scandal
The operator of a company that advertised a "unique method" of preparing students for graduate entrance exams was arrested in California on Saturday after allegedly helping students cheat on the tests.
George Kobayashi, a 45-year-old Californian, was charged with fraud in connection with an elaborate scam that took advantage of time zones to send standardized graduate entrance exam answers from New York to Los Angeles.
Barbour, Newberry residents speak against coed proposal
With the threat of traditionally all-female residence halls becoming coed, more than 60 students met last night to voice their frustations.
"We got several complaints from Barbour-Newberry residents. We thought that this would be the proper place for both cases to be made," said Randy Juip, president of the Residence Halls Association.
MSA backs afrmative action rally
The Michigan Student Assembly again came out in support of affirmative action last night - but it did so with a little more than one-half of its members present.
Two weeks ago more than 150 students and MSA members packed the Michigan Union Ballroom to show their support for affirmative action during the MSA meeting - last night's meeting was a different story.
