'M' spikers bounce Georgia, grab second in weekend tourney

Let this weekend be a lesson for future visitors to Cliff Keen Arena. You don't want to play the Michigan women's volleyball team when it's mad. Just ask Georgia.

Stickers split weekend games

The construction surrounding Ocker Field makes quite an interesting backdrop for Michigan field hockey games this year. The cranes and bulldozers go hand in hand with the efforts of Michigan's first-year coach Marcia Pankratz. She will be responsible for improving on last year's groundbreaking season.

Touched By Fate

Here are three different women, each with a different story, coupled with memories and dreams. Three different women, three different roads traveled, yet somehow fated to come and stand together.

Icers' time has come; how long will it remain?

Red Berenson likes to talk about the paper weight that lies on his desk in Weidenbach Hall. Rest assured. The Michigan hockey coach is more interesting than that. This rock is special. It does more than keep his mail from flying out the window. It has Berenson's inspiration for his team etched in stone.

Michigan men's rugby comes out for revenge, but falls to Michigan State, 14-7

At this time last year, the Michigan men's rugby team was 0-1, fresh off a season-opening loss to Michigan State. This season, the Wolverines find themselves with the same record, but team morale is undoubtedly higher than it was at this point last year.

Syracuse tarred and feathered

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Junior college transfer Chris Keldorf, cool under the oppressive heat of the Carrier Dome, completed 22 of 32 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns Saturday night as No. 24 North Carolina upset ninth-ranked Syracuse 27-10.

Clement leads Miami to 52-6 win

MIAMI (AP) - The Miami Hurricanes looked both efficient and explosive Saturday, and that was with their top rusher and receiver watching from the bench. Ryan Clement threw four touchdown passes in the first half and Dyral McMillan ran for 156 yards to lead 11th-ranked Miami past The Citadel 52-6.

Gators put the bite on Georgia Southern; Seminoles spear Duke

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Danny Wuerffel answered coach Steve Spurrier's criticism with near perfection Saturday night, missing on just one pass in leading No. 4 Florida to a 62-14 victory over Georgia Southern.

Colorado, Tennessee convincing in wins

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) - Koy Detmer passed for two touchdowns and ran for another, and No. 5 Colorado survived an early scare to outslug in-state rival Colorado State 48-34 Saturday night.

'M' men's harriers slosh through weekend tourney, grab top-four spots

Many sporting events get postponed due to inclement weather, but the rain could not stop the Michigan men's cross country team from competing in the Michigan Open on Saturday. The times were slower than in years' past, with the weather slowing down the pace.

'M' soccer earns a victory the Wright way

After the Michigan women's soccer team dropped its first game to Butler, the Wolverines saw a need to "learn each other's strengths and weaknesses." It didn't take them too long.

Play the best to be the best; weak schedules ruin football tradition

An old saying in sports goes something like this: "To be the best, you have to beat the best." Whoever coined that phrase must not have been referring to college football. Glancing over the scores from this weekend's college football weekend, fans see a disturbing trend. National Championship contenders Florida, Ohio State, Miami (Fla), Notre Dame and Texas all dominated teams that will only be recovering from New Year's Eve parties on the biggest bowl day of the year.

Top opponents only help 'M' spikers

Normally a trip to Hawaii would include nothing but fun and sun. However, the Michigan women's volleyball team's trip there was not a vacation. The Wolverines played and lost to No. 1 Hawaii, No. 6 UCLA and No. 25 Louisville. When the Wolverines returned home, their schedule wasn't any easier, losing to No. 9 Florida in their home opener at the Volleyball Challenge.

Youthful resurgence to lead 'M' women netters in 1996

After ending last season decimated by injuries, the Michigan women's tennis team is back this year revitalized with youth. With this influx of youth, however, comes inexperience.

Spartans left green with envy

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska's defense provided a lot of offense for the top-ranked Cornhuskers in their season opener Saturday. Safety Mike Minter and defensive end Grant Wistrom scored on interception returns, and cornerback Mike Fullman scored on a 62-yard punt return as Nebraska began its bid for a third consecutive national championship with a 55-14 victory over Michigan State.

Badgers dam up Eagles, 24-3

MADISON (AP) - Carl McCullough understands the fuss over fellow tailback Ron Dayne, a highly touted backup who drew the louder ovations and more of the attention Saturday. "Hey, that's the big cat coming in," McCullough said. "He's a great player who the fans want to watch him play."

Legendary coach Cozza calls it quits

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - Carm Cozza, the football coach at Yale for more than three decades, confirmed today that he will retire when the season ends. Cozza, 66, who guided the Elis to 10 Ivy League titles, made the official announcement this morning, ending months of media speculation about his retirement plans.

Nittany Lions roar over Louisville, 24-7

STATE COLLEGE (AP) - Curtis Enis broke through a tackle for a 25-yard gain on his first carry of the game. It would be his longest run of the day. And while there was no repeat of his 241-yard game in the season opener, Enis did get 104 yards and a touchdown as No. 7 Penn State took an early 21-point lead and held on to beat stubborn Louisville 24-7 Saturday.

Illini's end-zone troubles persist in 55-3 loss to USC

Southern Cal corrected the pass protection problems which contributed to the season-opening loss to Penn State and exploited a multitude of miscues from a young and overworked Illini defense. Trojan quarterbacks Brad Otten and Matt Koffler were 15-of-23 with no interceptions and 428 yards for the game, the most against Illinois since 1985, when Purdue had 464 yards in the air.
