What's the rush?

Every school year, a new class of students arrives, ready to experience one of the most exciting times of their lives. As first-year students adjust to their new roommates, their classes and college life in general, they begin to search for their own group - their niche. The Greek system, with its promise of social involvement and camaraderie, is often appealing - especially to new students who haven't adjusted to living without parents.

Gambling with grades

The University should offer its students a wide array of academic choices. A pass/fail option in a course allows a student to get credit for a class, but forego the grade points. The current Sept. 23 deadline - three weeks from the beginning of classes - does not provide adequate time to decide whether the pass/fail option is appropriate for specific classes. The deadline must be extended to the middle of the semester.

Clinton's book of practical cats

While T.S. Eliot certainly did not have the Clinton presidency in mind when he composed "The Naming of Cats," this poem provides a surprisingly nice lens through which to contemplate the first four years of Planet Bill.

Welfare bill harms children

Adhering to his 1992 campaign decree to "change welfare as we know it," President Bill Clinton has once again confounded liberal supporters, undermined Republican foes and redefined himself by signing the Welfare Reform Act.
