'M' field hockey opens conference campaign

With five games under its belt, the Michigan field hockey team is about to begin the meat of its season this weekend at Ocker Field. The Wolverines will face Ohio State tomorrow at 4 p.m., with national power Penn State following Sunday at noon. One thing Michigan (3-2) won't have to worry about as it begins its trek toward the top of the Big Ten is a lack of confidence. According to coach Marcia Pankratz, the Wolverines are flying after a stunning come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Ball State last weekend.

UCLA quarterback McNown adjusting to role as leader of inexperienced offense

Last season, Cade McNown did not even appear on the UCLA football depth chart. Twelve months later, he holds the future of Bruins football in the palm of his hand. Suddenly, the sophomore has become the second most experience member of an offense filled with question marks. He faces the daunting task of leading an offense depleted by NFL departures and graduations. No longer will he have the luxury of handing the ball to Karim Abdul-Jabbar or being protected by Jonathan Ogden and company. The majority of the pressure, most say, will fall on the left-hander. McNown, however, is hearing none of it.

Buckeyes face first real test against Irish

One thing is for sure - Ohio State will not score 70 points this week, as it has in its first two games. Notre Dame is not Rice, and it's not Pitt. The Fighting Irish are an excellent team and will give the Buckeyes their first test, in a game that will feature as even a matchup as there can be this year. Many teams will anxiously watch this game to see if the Buckeyes are really as good as they have looked.

Michigan cross country coach Warhurst has seen plenty of talent in his 23-year tenure

Michigan men's cross-country coach Ron Warhurst is beginning his 23rd year at the helm, long enough to see plenty of talented stars come and go. But that doesn't mean his best days are behind him. "The boys are young, and they keep me feeling (young)," Warhurst said. "They will tell you I still like the loud boisterous jokes during practice."

Ohio State and Notre Dame prepare for showdown

With No. 4 Ohio State at No. 5 Notre Dame on Saturday, the Big Game Factor should be considered - Irish coach Lou Holtz usually wins them, Buckeyes coach John Cooper usually loses them. In his ninth season at Ohio State, Cooper is a commendable 67-28-5, but 1-6-1 against Big Ten rival Michigan. Although the Buckeyes beat the Irish last season, they lost their perfect season and national title shot with a 31-23 loss to the Wolverines.

Cyganiak, Moon ready for Clay Court tourney

Senior Sarah Cyganiak and junior Sora Moon are the only members of the Michigan women's tennis team to participate in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Clay Court Championships. The tournament, hosted by the Suburban Club of Baltimore County, is the first leg of the ITA Grand Slam Event and goes through Sunday.
Moon and Cyganiak play today in the main draw of the doubles competition. Their opponents will be determined by the results of the qualifying rounds played yesterday.
