User beware: 'U' computer systems not safe from fraud
Recently the Information Technology Division reported that several students' uniqnames and passwords were stolen, in a plot by unidentified hackers. The incident sent a ripple of fear through the University community - strangers could expose computer users' private information. While the University should be concerned about the security lapse, computer users, with a little knowledge and effort, can take precautions to safeguard their e-mail accounts.
A hairy situation: VMI should embrace armed force's rules
Last summer, the Supreme Court ruled that the all-male Virginia Military Institute, nestled in the Blue Ridge mountains of Virginia, could not exclude women while taking state money. VMI, the last single-sex, state-supported school in the nation, prides itself in teaching men "vigorous virtues" - self-reliance, self-control, courage and determination. At first, VMI refused to allow the women to enroll. But after a lengthy legal battle, the institution is finally allowing women to apply. At the same time, VMI is taking steps to make the future female cadets feel uncomfortable by imposing unreasonable standards. VMI should follow the lead of the armed forces and treat women with respect.
Feminine wiles can talk any cop out of a traffic citation
At my sister's wedding, I told my new brother-in-law that he could certainly drink more wine because, even if he got pulled over, he could probably talk his way out of a ticket - especially if he had a really cute date with him. (Please forgive my obvious sexism; I was really young at the time.) He said he figured cops wouldn't give attractive women special treatment.
