Wolverines work double-time
With 1:09 remaining in the second overtime, frustration turned to joy for the Wolverines. Freshman Emily Schmitt scored to give the Michigan women's soccer team an exhilarating 1-0 victory over Indiana yesterday afternoon. Schmitt's goal earned the Wolverines (1-1 Big Ten, 4-2-2 overall) their first conference victory of the season. They lost 2-0 to Ohio State in their Big Ten opener on Friday.
How about that?: Howard's 4 scores pump up Michigan
Saturday's Michigan-UCLA match-up figured to provide excitement for fans of both teams.
And it did - sort of.
If you bleed maize and blue, you were certainly excited by how well your offense executed. But if you cheer for UCLA, the only excitement you felt was your rush to the exits early in the second half.
'M' field hockey stuck by Lions, 5-2
It was all too simple a story that was played out yesterday afternoon at Ocker Field. The Michigan field hockey team took the field against a deeper, more experienced Penn State squad - and the better team won.
Yost gets faceoff face lift
The Michigan hockey team may not recognize its home ice upon first glance this season.
Yost Ice Arena, Michigan's hockey home since 1973, underwent major renovations this summer.
Michigan tennis tandem bounced
Senior Sarah Cyganiak and junior Sora Moon were defeated in the third round of doubles competition at the National Clay Court Championship on Friday.
UCLA, Michigan: Traditions in excellence
I'm sorry. The T-shirt just doesn't work. You know, the one that has Harvard: The Michigan of the East inscripted on it. Now, I know it's just a joke, and a popular one, too. Every campus bookstore sells the shirt and about one in three students own one. But come on, Michigan can't compete academically with Harvard anymore than Harvard can compete athletically with Michigan.
Tailbacks spell doom for UCLA
The hits and the hurting were becoming a bit much for Clarence Williams, while he seemed to be carrying the ball every other down for the Wolverines.
Williams needed help, and last week, he looked to fellow running back Chris Howard for it.
Woodson's more than just window dressing
Charles Woodson is not a stand-in. He does not play offense, defense and special teams for the Wolverines to fill in, help out, or patch up anything. He is there to electrify.
'M' breaks 20 points for first time in 5 games against Bruins
C'mon, admit it, you didn't expect Michigan to score any more than 20 points Saturday.
Exactly 20, sure, but definitely not any more than that. After all, hadn't the Wolverines hit that number the past four games?
Offense steps up, but let's all wait on this undefeated stuff
The chant rose from a portion of Michigan Stadium somewhere in the middle of freshman John Anes' eight-straight carries to finish off Saturday's ball game. Michigan led UCLA, 38-9, and was about to move to 4-0 on the season. And the students knew it.
Too strong: Buckeyes roll over Notre Dame
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Ohio State showed coach John Cooper that his third-ranked team really is as good as he thought after a 29-16 win over No. 5 Notre Dame.
Wolverines' sticks can shoot, can't score lately
Not much good can happen if you don't score goals, and for the Michigan field hockey team last weekend, not much did. And despite playing two games close, bad luck eventually struck the young Wolverines.
Men linksters take eighth at Northern
The Michigan men's golf team, playing shorthanded, finished with a two-round total of 615 (309-306), good for eighth in the rain-shortened Northern Intercollegiate Tournament in Columbus.
The Northern, which saw Saturday's round canceled due to rain and Friday's rounds played in intermittent showers, was won by host Ohio State. The Buckeyes shot a two-round total of 589 (296-293), eight shots ahead of second place Northwestern (297-300).
Freshman Harris steady for men's golf
While Michigan has competed in only two meets this season, there is a definite trend. Coach Jim Carras has played redshirt freshman Michael Harris in both.
"Harris is becoming the player we thought he would be when we recruited him," Carras said. "We redshirted him last year so he could used to college. We expect him to only get better."
Park wins Lady Badger Invite
It was the perfect ending to a great day on the links.
Michigan women's golfer Sharon Park's final shot at the Lady Badger Invitational in Wisconsin yesterday not only wrapped up her second collegiate invitational victory, and not only put the finishing touch on her collegiate-best round of 74 - it also came from 60 yards away.
'M' volleyball drops 2 road matches in 5 games
The curtain opened on the second act of the Michigan women's volleyball team's season this weekend, and the reviews are far from glowing.
The Wolverines started the Big Ten portion of their schedule with a pair of five-set losses, falling at Iowa and Illinois. In both matches, Michigan squandered two-games-to-one leads.
Big Ten volleyball title up for grabs
Big Ten women's volleyball doesn't have a catchy slogan. But if it did, it would be probably something like, "Big Ten women's volleyball - it's pretty good."
Actually, that would be an understatement.
Women harriers win Fall Classic
There may have been doubts that the talented but young Michigan women's cross country team would rise to the challenge presented by strong competition.
Those doubts are now as blown-away as Michigan's opponents were at the Miami (Ohio) Fall Classic Invitational on Saturday.
