Taylor leaves 'M' basketball for NBA

Michigan basketball player Maurice Taylor confirmed Friday what most fans suspected for quite some time - he is giving up his final year of eligibility at Michigan and entering the NBA draft. Surrounded by family and friends, Taylor said at a news conference at Crisler Arena that it was time to pursue his life-long dream, playing professional basketball.

'U' will not lose funds for same-sex benefits

The University's authority to provide employee benefits to same-sex couples without suffering monetary consequences was returned Friday. In a 12-page decision, State Attorney General Frank Kelley said reductions in state appropriations to universities by an amount equal to the cost of extending employee benefits to the unmarried partners of university employees violates the institution's autonomy.

'U' students take back the night

They stood in an empty parking lot and screamed "No!" at the top of their lungs. They linked arms and shouted slogans against rape as they marched down E. Washington Street. They clasped hands and held them up in a silent show of solidarity.

About 125 University students took to the streets of Ann Arbor on Saturday and gave the town a makeover. Students painted, swept and tidied as part of the annual community service project, Into the Streets, sponsored by the campus group Project Serve.

U.S. violent crime rate decreases significantly

WASHINGTON - The Justice Department reported new evidence yesterday of a continuing decline in violent crime, but the figures showed urban blacks experienced less of a decline than other groups. In its annual survey of violent-crime victims, the department's Bureau of Justice Statistics said the national rate for rape, robbery, assault and other violent crimes fell by an overall 12.4 percent between 1994 and 1995.

Conducted by the State Bar of Michigan, the survey showed that many Michigan residents hold barristers in less than high esteem.

'U' students develop vehicle

Four University students and an off-road vehicle helped put the University's Michigan Integrated Design and Initiative program in the international spotlight. Last spring, industrial designers Mark Borus, Darren Wolfberg and Robert Gelardi joined Art and Architecture student Scott Howe to win the First International Audi Design Competition for their vehicle, named the Qamel.

Archer to aid Detroit Institute of Arts

DETROIT (AP) - The financially strapped Detroit Institute of Arts is expected to receive a substantial boost in city spending when Mayor Dennis Archer makes his annual budget address to City Council today.o Mayor's spokesperson Anthony Neely declined to discuss Archer's budget proposal, but said his boss is determined to save the DIA - one of the country's largest museums.
