Gainesville glory?: Blue readies for first NCAA title

Num - ber - one! The phrase has a nice ring to it. It's a number commonly shouted, sung and chanted by exhausted and teary-eyed yet triumphant men and women after winning championships.

Blue baseball bucked by Broncos, 7-1

KALAMAZOO - Another mid-week, non-conference game, and another loss for the Michigan baseball team. Yesterday, Western Michigan handed the Wolverines their fifth mid-week loss, 7-1. Ironically, the Broncos are one of only two teams that Michigan (22-14) has beaten in weekday games.

Softball splits with Chippewas, home-win streak ends

Alumni Field has been kind to the No. 12 Michigan softball team over the past few seasons. Very kind. So kind, in fact, that the Wolverines had a 27-game home winning streak entering yesterday's doubleheader with Central Michigan.

'M' softball lacking that killer instinct

Many call it killer instinct. Others call it bearing down in the clutch. Currently, the Michigan softball team is struggling to bring runners home from scoring position. Yesterday's second game was a good news-bad news situation for the Wolverines at the plate. The good news: Michigan's leadoff hitters reached base in five-straight innings. Eleven hitters reached base against Central Michigan starter Anne Foster.

DeGraw, Haro head to Nationals

One meet, two individuals. The meet is the NCAA men's gymnastics championships in Iowa City. The individuals are Michigan's Jose "La Lo" Haro and Timothy DeGraw. They will try to make the finals in a competition, touting the best gymnastics talent in the nation, including an Olympian.

Hitting frustration grips Michigan baseball

KALAMAZOO - When a baseball player is experiencing a slump, he often tries to overcompensate. All of a sudden, he's tense at the plate. He might take a pitch that he would normally hit, because he's nervous, or he might swing at a terrible pitch, because he's desperate.

'Nova's Thomas expected to enter Draft: Federal grand jury to investigate Fresno State basketball; 14 items listed in subpoenas

VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) - Tim Thomas is leaving Villanova after only one season of college basketball to enter the NBA draft, published reports said yesterday. The 6-foot-9 1/2 freshman forward averaged 16.9 points and six rebounds a game for Villanova, which finished the season 24-10 and reached the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Crew set for second dual meet

The Michigan women's crew team will face Iowa in conference action Sunday morning. In Iowa City, the Wolverines will be competing in their second dual meet of the season after a week off to focus on training.
