'M' spikers move on to 2nd round of NCAAs

The NCAA tournament is something new for both the Michigan and Temple volleyball teams. Last night in College Station, Texas, their inexperience showed. In a game that included many gigantic momentum swings, Michigan advanced to the second round of the tournament for the first time ever with a five-game victory over Atlantic 10 champion Temple, 15-8, 6-15, 15-12, 8-15, 15-10, snapping the Owls' 21-game winning streak.

Blue hoops to face first test

Despite the turnovers, the scoring droughts and the mental mistakes, the Michigan men's basketball team is 4-1. But the Wolverines' skin-of-their-teeth victories may soon turn into losses if they don't clean up their act. After struggling against small-time programs, the Wolverines will now face stronger competition as the non-conference season kicks into high gear tomorrow when Michigan hosts UNLV (3-1) at 1 p.m.

Herr returns, Turco returns home again

Winning games on the road in the CCHA is never easy, and for the Michigan hockey team, tonight's game against Lake Superior (3-4-3 CCHA, 4-6-3 overall) in Sault Ste. Marie should be no exception. But winning should be a little bit easier this weekend for the Wolverines (6-2-2, 11-3-2) because for the first time since suffering a groin injury against Minnesota in the season opener, Michigan captain Matt Herr is expected to play.

Pool records, victories mark women results

A lifetime best, two pool records and a handful of victories were the results of the first day of a three-day tournament for the Michigan women's swimming team. And that's on an off day. The flu-ridden Wolverines traveled to South Bend yesterday to partake in the Notre Dame Invitational against Syracuse, Notre Dame and Ohio University.

'M' swimmers compete in tune-up meet

The members of the Michigan men's swimming team went to the U.S. Open in Indianapolis to get some idea of what the future holds. That future, specifically, is the the FINA World Championships in Perth, Australia, Jan. 12-18. Yesterday, the Wolverines had their last chance this year to warm-up for the second-biggest competition of the season. And for those interested, they did so with correctly colored maize-and-blue warm-ups.

'M' hoops to play Fla. A&M

When the Michigan women's basketball team travels to the Ronald McDonald Classic this weekend, its game plan will be remarkably similar to one of the fast food chain's marketing schemes: go with the super-size. So far this season, Michigan's superior post play has made opposing teams' lives very difficult. Paced by senior center Pollyanna Johns, Michigan (5-1) has made a habit of getting the ball down low, resulting in easy baskets for the bigger Wolverines.
