Blowout city: Reid, Wolverines run away from Rebels, 83-59

The Michigan basketball team entered Saturday afternoon game against UNLV with a recurring, frustrating trend. So far this season, if the Wolverines grabbed a sizable lead - instead of putting the opponent away - they relinquished it and let the opposing team back into the game.

Icers say 'Soo' long to Lake Superior

SAULT STE. MARIE - The trip to the Upper Peninsula to face Lake Superior has usually been an unpleasant one for the Michigan hockey team. But Friday night looked like the first step toward erasing those bad memories for the Wolverines as they annihilated the Lakers, 7-0.

The captain returns: Senior Matt Herr appears on the ice for the first time since suffering an injury in October

A hockey player's senior year is supposed to be the pinnacle of his entire collegiate experience. It is the culmination of both his athletic and academic efforts over the previous three years - it's why he plays college hockey in the first place.

'Detroit' fails Guevara as 'M' falls to Duke

For most people it's just a city. For the Michigan women's basketball team, it's the play that decided their biggest game of the young season. When the Wolverines were trailing No. 15 Duke by one point with 15 seconds left yesterday, Michigan coach Sue Guevara called Detroit.

Volleyball loses in NCAAs

All good things must come to an end. The Michigan volleyball team learned that lesson all too well Friday night, as Texas A&M ended the Wolverines' first-ever NCAA tournament run, 15-10, 15-6, 15-6, in the second round.

Wolverines fall short in U.S. Open

The U.S. Open came and went for the Michigan men's swimming team, and the displayed emotion was complacency. The tournament brought many top swimmers from around the world, including several national clubs. Many of the other countries use the times from the U.S. Open as factors to select their team members, whereas the U.S. team was decided in the qualifying tournament held this past summer.

'M' swimmers blow competition out of water: Harris becomes first Wolverine to qualify for NCAA championships with record swim

Talk about starting out with a bang. Last weekend, at the Notre Dame swimming and diving invitational, Kasey Harris was the first Michigan swimmer to qualify for the NCAA championships in March. In addition to qualifying, her time of 1:58.72 in the 200-yard butterfly places her in the Big Ten record books with the fourth-fastest time in conference history.

Traitors like Brown shown up by loyalist like Donnan

As much as he is a Michigan man, Bo Schembechler probably wishes he could be a North Carolina man. Just for a day, at least, before he returns to his Blue roots. If placed in that capacity, Schembechler would have the opportunity to re-enact his greatest moment as Michigan's athletic director, a position he held briefly from 1988-90, in between the tenures of Don Canham and Jack Weidenbach.

Muckalt's leadership, skill guides Wolverines

SAULT STE. MARIE - Who can say exactly what went through Bill Muckalt's mind as he stood with the puck, poised in front of the Lake Superior net and goaltender Rob Galatiuk? It was five minutes into the second period. The Wolverines were leading the Lakers, 1-0, thanks to a goal from Muckalt just minutes earlier.

Victory over Rebels brings out best in Blue

On Saturday, there was a certain symmetry to Michigan's victory over UNLV. The game began and ended in similar fashion with the Michigan basketball players standing in front of their seats, cheering on their teammates, enjoying the game.

Wolverines, Traylor dance to day of firsts against UNLV

Saturday's 83-59 victory over UNLV was a game of firsts for the Michigan men's basketball team. For the first time this season, the Wolverines had more assists than turnovers (20 assists, 15 turnovers) - but never mind that part. Forget that all five starters scored in double figures for the first time. Even ignore, momentarily, that for the first time Robbie Reid looked like a terrific point guard.

Kansas falls to Terps

WASHINGTON (AP) - It was hardly a recipe for an upset. Maryland blew a 15-point second-half lead, lost its two top players to fouls and didn't score a field goal in the last 4:10. Yet the No. 23 Terrapins made seven of eight free throws in the final two minutes to beat No. 2 Kansas 86-83 yesterday in the first round of the Franklin National Bank Classic.

Newcomers' emergence erases concerns about lack of depth

Before the season, there were several knocks on the Michigan men's basketball team - they're underachievers, they don't play with enough intensity, they can't play defense, they play down to their opponents. But the one knock that was supposed to bring the door down and doom the Wolverines' season was the team's depth, or lack thereof.

Successful year offers glimpse of a bright future for 'M' volleyball

It occurs countless times in the world of sports - a team comes out of nowhere to have a remarkable season and falls back into the realm of also-rans just as quickly. While the Michigan volleyball team had its best season ever with a 21-12 record and a win in their first NCAA tournament game, it looks at this season as the start of a winning pattern, not an aberration.

Johns on the move, Walker set to return

Michigan center Pollyanna Johns has been on the move of late. Not only did she move up two spots on the Wolverines' all-time scoring list, but she also moved up one spot on Michigan's all-time rebound list.

Vegas vacation wrestles fourth place for 'M'

A wrestling tournament held at a casino hotel in Las Vegas certainly posed a few distractions for Michigan. The Wolverines, however, were able to focus on what they do best to place fourth in the Cliff Keen Classic. The tournament, held Friday and Saturday at the Star of the Desert Arena in Buffalo Bill's Hotel, was only minutes from the alluring lights and high rollers of Las Vegas casinos. It drew 42 teams from around the nation, 13 of which are ranked in the top 20 in preseason polls.
