Students support 'U' admissions
Representatives from seven Law School student organizations united yesterday to express their support for the University's admissions policies.
The panel members announced in a joint statement that they "recognize that affirmative action is a necessary means of combatting prejudice, unequal opportunity and under-representation."
Rose Bowl has potential for big 'U' revenues
The phrase "coming up roses" has the potential to mean more than a Rose Bowl victory and a national championship for the University on Jan.1, when the Wolverines square off against the Washington State Cougars.
Different types of revenue, ranging from University-licensed merchandise to annual bowl-game conference percentages, promise to earn the University hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Gangs cause concern in A2
Many people associate gangs with decrepit neighborhoods and decaying buildings, not with the well-kept streets and serene exterior of University buildings.
But inside the Fleming Administration Building is a 3-inch-thick file on gangs, including examples of dress styles, hand signals and posture that could signify gang membership.
'U' sororities sign trial BYOB policy; IFC may also join
Eight of the University's 17 sororities signed an agreement last night to participate in a trial period for a new Bring-Your-Own-Beverage alcohol policy.
"When we sat down to hash it out, we thought it would be better to try a trial period," said Delta Delta Delta president Katie Heid, an LSA senior.
Housing changes confuse, worry students
After students gathered at West Quad residence hall Sunday to discuss reapplying for housing, University Housing officials plan to mail a letter today explaining the upcoming changes for students living in residence halls.
The forum, led by representatives from University Housing, attempted to answer all students' questions about re-application. Earlier this month, Housing officials announced new policies that would limit juniors and seniors to living only in Cambridge, Fletcher, Oxford and Vera Baits halls.
SACUA addresses compensation in letter
Citing policies of faculty governance bodies at other schools that allow members to receive additional benefits for their service, the Senate Advisory Committee on University Affairs agreed yesterday to send a letter to the Office of the Provost expressing interest in appropriate compensation.
RAs must take psychology course
When students living in residence halls encounter problems with campus life, they often turn to their resident advisers for help.
A new University policy aims to make sure that RAs will be well trained to handle questions. The Office of University Housing is requiring RAs to take a three-credit psychology course during the winter semester.
'U', local students use art to unteach racism
Visual representations of the existence of and solutions to racism lined the walls of the William Monroe Trotter House on Saturday.
The "Expressions on Racism" exhibit represented the enthusiasm and community involvement of eight members of the Residential College course "Unteaching Racism."
