Comedian's film gets no respect

It's hard to deny that tabloid talk shows are a fascinating and troubling part of American culture. A film that handles this phenomenon with regard for its complexity and richness is certainly desperately needed. Unfortunately, "Meet Wally Sparks" does not fill that void.

Carter Quartet, Jazz Artists dazzle crowd

On Friday night, the University Musical Society presented "Conversin' With the Elders," which featured the James Carter Quartet and the Detroit Jazz Artists. Also appearing on the program was the Leon Parker Duo. The concert was titled after Carter's current CD, "Conversin' With the Elders." On the CD, he pays homage to various Detroit jazz musicians who greatly influenced his musical career and his life.

Developed characters make A2 mystery a treat

"NCAA TO INVESTIGATE 'M' FOOTBALL RECRUITING," blares the headline of The Michigan Daily, thanks to clever sleuthing by Daily reporter Zoe Kaplan. A school known for its pride in football and its high standards of procedure in matters concerning the sport and its regulations would not easily accept an investigation - especially when the information is leaked during President's Weekend, a gathering of important alumni.

UMS show captures the blues' magic

The University Musical Society, known mostly for its lavish, erudite classical concerts and highbrow jazz shows, let its collective hair down Saturday night. The "Blues, Roots, Honks and Moans" show at Hill Auditorium was by far the most explosive and heady concert to which I've ever been under the auspices of UMS.
