Not just a tool of the trade, the Zamboni is a hockey icon

All eyes gaze curiously as he glides along the ice smoothly and effortlessly, leaving a trail behind him. His routine is fairly standard, yet perplexing and intriguing. In the ice hockey mecca that is Yost Arena, when the skaters leave the ice, fans are left to grapple with the mythical creature that replaces them.

Driving the Zamboni

Zamboni. I think the strange name makes the machine seem intriguing. So, when after a recent hockey game I had the opportunity to take a ride on a Zamboni, I thought I had hit the jackpot. I thoroughly enjoyed gliding along the ice on top of the massive machine and viewing the ice from directly above it. But what I really wanted to do was drive the Zamboni - when I learned that I could, I was elated.

Ann Arbor offers plenty of spicy, drippin', finger-lickin'-good ribs

Ann Arbor lies 2,500 miles north of Mississippi, but when you sink your teeth into Jesse Campbell's "Soul on a Roll" barbecue sandwich at Mr. Rib's Soul Food, you'd hardly know it.

It's in there: Each rib joint has its own special, secret recipe for sauce

"Your sauce is the main thing. If you don't have sauce, you don't have barbecue." DeLong should know - after 30 years of cooking up barbecue, he hasn't changed his sauce once. And don't even mention the secret recipe. "I'm not going to tell you much about it, man," he said. Even in the name of journalistic comparison, DeLong was hesitant to fork over a couple of samples.

New Edition's DeVoe arrested; Thurman joins several projects

doned the working title, "Second Album Syndrome," for the more appropriate title previously mentioned. The 12-song effort will get its stateside debut on March 14 when the band plays a showcase at the annual South By Southwest festival in Austin, Texas.

Fans' cheers, chants spur home team to victories, set tradition

There are hockey fans, then there are Michigan hockey fans. To visiting teams, they are obnoxious zealots, whose cacophonic chants and demeanor demonstrate little respect. To the Michigan team, they are enthusiastic fans whose clever and ingenious chants inspire the home team to victory - 31 consecutive games without a loss, in fact, on home ice.

All is not fair 'In Love and War'

Three days a week, I teach a high school creative writing class. Last Thursday, when we came to a lesson on dialogue, I chose Ernest Hemingway as an example. My students are a sharp bunch, and they'd all heard of Hemingway before, though they'd never read him.

Bacon, Bacon, everywhere

What's new in the crazy world of arts this week? Translation: Oh, where, oh where shall this column take me? Well ... Oscar nominations are out, and despite some surprises (Billy Bob Thorton of "Slingblade"), I have nothing substantial to complain about.

Seva Restaurant's not just for vegetarians anymore

Just a couple blocks off State Street is a restaurant that is quite distinct in comparison to the street's bar and grill atmosphere. You will find margaritas and beer at Seva Market and Restaurant, but classical music plays quietly in the background, and you cannot order a hamburger.

The list! A weekly list of who's where, what's happening and why you need to be there ...
