How the Zamboni works:

TRACEY HARRIS
1. The rear 77" blade scrapes off a 1/16"-1/8" layer of ice from the rink.

2. The horizontal conveyor (a giant screw-like auger) collects snow and brings it to the middle of the Zamboni.

3. The vertical conveyor (another auger) picks the snow up from the ice and shoots it into the front bin. (A plunger is used approximately once per lap to break up the snow when it goes from horizontal to vertical)

4. Cold "ice-washing" water is fed from a wash-water tank to a squeegee-like "conditioner" which smoothes the ice.

5. A vacuum sucks up the "dirty" water.

6. Hot "ice-making" water is spread on the ice by a towel behind the conditioner.

7. The hot water freezes quickly, forming a new layer of ice.
