Smoke screen: Federal dollars should support drug education
February is National Marijuana Awareness Month. While many may laugh it off and light up a joint, proclaiming their awareness, the government and local health educators are attempting to address the increase in marijuana use among teens. Locally, two forums will attempt to discuss the problem and educate the community. Nationally, the federal government has proclaimed a televised war on drugs with a $350-million media campaign designed to counter the teen usage increase.
Giving back: Programs benefit inmates and society
If students visit the art gallery in Rackham this week, they won't find easels from the studios of Van Gogh or Matisse. Instead, they will find masterpieces of a different origin: prison cells. The work displayed - through Feb. 24 - was created entirely by inmates from Michigan's correctional facilities. The program - jointly produced by the University's School of Art and Design, LSA, Rackham and the Washington Council for the Arts - has achieved almost immediate positive results for the inmates who participated.
Cafe Evil: Lousy service comes on the side
There is a boil on the butt of humanity in our very own home University environment and I feel that it is up to me, your savior Heather, Warrior Princess, to alert those of you unsuspecting mortals to it. A plague infesting a particular coffee house in the South U. locale shall go unmentioned no longer.
An open letter to the 'U'
On Friday, Feb. 7, 1997, there was a rather serious fight at a student organization dance in the Michigan Union. This well-attended event included both University of Michigan students and guests from outside the University. The fight started at around 12:45 a.m. and involved a large number of people. Student sponsors of the event, Michigan Union staff, some guests and the Department of Public Safety were all involved in trying to restore order and safety. The event had to be canceled and all attendees evacuated from the building.
