Iowa rolls in 80-75 win

IOWA CITY - Buried. That, in many ways, is what happened to the Michigan men's basketball team last night in its 80-75 loss at Iowa. After a nip-and-tuck first four minutes that saw the Wolverines grab a 12-8 lead, the Hawkeyes pounced. Over the next seven minutes, they exploded into a 23-4 run that gave them a 31-16 lead, and left Michigan in a hole just too deep to get out of.

No more time for talk from these Wolverines

IOWA CITY - Talk is cheap. And for this basketball team, it's about as worthless as sunblock during a Michigan winter. There is no more time for idle banter - not in late February, not from this bunch of Wolverines who have done enough yapping for the next few seasons. There is no more time to say: "We know what we have to work on."

Shakespeare, Eberwein grab individual titles

INDIANAPOLIS - The Michigan women's swimming team took the first step toward its 11th-straight conference title yesterday, earning 208.5 points, 30 ahead of second-place Minnesota, at the Big Ten championship. The third-ranked Wolverines were led by Shannon Shakespeare and Jen Eberwein, who each claimed an individual Big Ten title. Eberwein was also part of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team.

No. 12 grapplers fall, 24-10, to fourth-ranked Illini

Maybe it was a sign. Due to a technical problem, the national anthem was cut off at the halfway point before last night's wrestling meet between No. 12 Michigan and No. 4 Illinois. Two hours later, the Wolverines lost, 24-10.

Seniors' careers at Yost hit final regular weekend

When studying the schedule at the beginning of the season, this weekend looked like it could decide the CCHA regular-season title. The Michigan hockey team will host Lake Superior - probably the Wolverines' biggest nemesis in recent years - at 7 p.m. today and tomorrow at Yost Ice Arena.

Cellar dwellers visit 'M' women at right time

What is the best thing that could happen to a team following a 39-point loss on the road? Probably a pair of home games against the two worst teams in the conference. This is the scenario the Michigan women's basketball team will play out this weekend as it tries to recover from a 104-65 loss to Northwestern last Sunday.

Women's track

No more regular-season Michigan women's track meets in which team scores aren't kept. No more preparation - the Big Tens start tomorrow in Champaign. Finally, the results will count. And, once the dust settles, Michigan coach James Henry thinks the outcome could very well count in Michigan's favor.

Men's track

In just one week's time, the Michigan men's track team has had to reconstruct its frame of mind. Last week, the Wolverines sent only half the squad to Ypsilanti for the EMU Invitational. This week, the entire team will travel to Iowa City.
