Aggressive 'Bama defense stymies Blue

TAMPA, Fla. - When it was all said and done, the Outback Bowl was nothing more than a summary of the entire Michigan football season. The Wolverines were hurt by a costly turnover, an offense that failed three times to score after moving within the Alabama 35-yard line, and a defense that couldn't hold the Crimson Tide when the Wolverines needed it most. The result was a 17-14 loss to Alabama on New Year's Day in front of 53,161 at Houlihan's Stadium.

Don't expect the unexpected; Michigan mired in mediocrity

TAMPA, Fla. - There is so much in college football that is unexpected. For instance, no one expected Northwestern to win the Big Ten two years in a row. No one expected Nebraska to lose a game this season, much less two. No one expected Troy Davis, a little-known running back from Iowa State, to rush for over 2,000 yards in successive seasons.

Wolverines stumble to 1-1 Big Ten start

EVANSTON - Thank God for Louis Bullock. With the Michigan men's basketball team desperately in need of a win against Northwestern on Saturday, the sophomore guard dropped 25 points on the Wildcats in the Wolverines' 75-57 victory.

No. 1 Michigan battles Big Red to 3-3 tie

Referee Roger Graff took control of last night's game at Yost Ice Arena early. The result - a good and relatively clean overtime thriller. In the end, No. 13 Cornell tied No. 1 Michigan, 3-3, as the Wolverines failed to win at home for the first time since tying Ohio State last season.

Women cagers prevail over break

With its 97-90 victory over Northwestern on Jan. 3, the Michigan women's basketball team won consecutive Big Ten games for the first time since the 1994-95 season and surpassed last season's conference win total of one.

Devils enjoy magical season despite defeat

TEMPE, Ariz. - The people of this college desert town are in a state of mourning. It's as if their favorite son recently traveled to some far-off war in some far-off country. And they have just received notice that he's dead.

'M' cagers face tough Big Ten season ahead

While most of us were at home having visions of sugarplums dance in our heads, the Michigan women's basketball team started the Big Ten portion of its season.< Considering that the Wolverines are 194-373 in their 23-year history, have never won a conference title and have never had a player selected to the All-Big Ten first team, expectations are higher than usual for Michigan this season.

Floyd heals, reveals his potential: Alabama native helps 'M'; Hamilton, Bowens set records

TAMPA, Fla. - Chris Floyd had the ball, and even though it had been a long time since he'd been healthy, he knew what to do. Tuck the ball in. Charge straight ahead. Decapitate anyone in the way.

Always a cowboy at heart, coach rides final victory into sunset

TAMPA, Fla. - If Alabama coach Gene Stallings had his druthers, he would have sported a cowboy hat, spurs and hung out at the OK Corral. "If I had my time to live, the 1800s would have been it," said Stallings, who admitted to being a big fan of westerns. A fan despite that they all end the same way.

Practices, pressure and pounds sit Dreisbach, promote Griese: Quarterback controversy likely ignited by Carr's pregame switch

TAMPA, Fla. - Underneath his pads and bravado, Scott Dreisbach had been hiding the effects of a season of punishment. Until the end, Dreisbach seemed to look like a starting quarterback and talk like a starting quarterback. But for Michigan coach Lloyd Carr, when Dreisbach's passes had lost their zip in practice and his body weight had dropped from a preseason 212 pounds to a prebowl 198, surface appearances were not enough.

After a huge collapse, Michigan must find an answer now

EVANSTON - It seems almost like last season. Less than three weeks ago, Maurice Taylor was answering questions about whether this bunch of Wolverines had finally eclipsed the legacy of the Fab Five. Michigan had just beaten Arizona in overtime with Taylor stricken with such a bad case of the flu, he needed an I.V. the day before. Starting point guard Travis Conlan was hobbled by a swollen ankle.

One year after surgery, Ward condent in role

EVANSTON - On the third day of January last year, Jerod Ward had surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. The operation was an unpleasant reminder of the year just past, which had seen Ward's freshman season with the Michigan men's basketball team cut short by an injury to his right knee in March, and the torn ACL just 10 games into his sophomore season.

Win over nemesis Arizona prequel to Hawaiian debacle

The Michigan basketball team was about as busy as Santa Claus over winter break and traveled almost as many miles. Although the Wolverines did get a great gift - an overtime victory over Arizona - they also picked up some coal in their proverbial stockings, losing twice on their way to a sixth-place finish at the Rainbow Classic in Honolulu.

Wisconsin takes out No. 12 Indiana: Minnesota strong in conference opener

MADISON (AP) - Wisconsin scored the game's first 17 points and went on to a 71-58 victory over No. 12 Indiana on Saturday, the Badgers' first win over the Hoosiers since 1980, a span of 31 games.

'M' icers survive Lake State: Ninth straight trophy is reward at season's halfway point

Lake Superior goaltender John Grahame stood a few feet from the goal mouth, hunched over, hands on his knees, head bowed between his legs.

Cornell's 3-3 tie with Michigan 'a great opportunity to gain respect' nationally

Before his squad faced the Michigan hockey team last night, Cornell coach Mike Schafer was frank about his team's expectations. "This is a great opportunity to gain respect on the national scene," he said.

'Bama defense too much for Blue: Wolverines kept out of end zone until game's final moments

TAMPA, Fla. - Long after Michigan had dropped its second consecutive bowl game, a number of Alabama fans remained on the field at Houlihan's Stadium engaged in a game of touch football.

Banged-up 'M' wrestlers jump out to perfect dual-meet season start

Despite an encouraging 2-0 start, the Michigan wrestling team is limping into its dual-meet season. Michigan won back-to-back matches against Eastern Michigan and Lehigh. The Wolverines handily beat the intrastate rival Eagles, 34-6, on Jan. 4 and survived a scare from Lehigh, 23-16 on Jan. 5.
