Plane crash near Metro kills 29

A Comair commuter plane crashed yesterday afternoon just 25 miles outside of snow-blanketed Ann Arbor, killing all 29 on board. LSA senior Arita Sharangpani and at least four Detroit residents were among those killed. Comair officials released the names of 20 victims last night and they plan to announce the remaining names this morning.

RAISINVILLE TOWNSHIP - A yellow farmhouse stands 250 yards from the field where Comair flight 3272 crashed here yesterday. "We are right in one of the approach lanes," said Don Helser, a resident of Grape, Mich., who lives adjacent to the crash site. "In this day and age it was just a matter of time. The plane just had a disaster and failed."

Rose meets with Clinton on loans

Representing students receiving financial aid nationwide, Michigan Student Assembly President Fiona Rose spoke to President Clinton in the Oval Office yesterday in support of direct federal student loans. Rose was selected along with six other college students by the Department of Education to meet with Clinton and Secretary of Education Richard Riley.

Area Muslims prepare for Ramadan

Today marks the beginning of Ramadan, a month in which Muslim University students will join millions all over the world in fasting. As proscribed in the five pillars of Islam, Muslims are forbidden to eat, drink, chew gum or smoke from sunrise to sunset. The fasting continues until Feb. 9, when Muslims begin to celebrate the Eid-ul-sitr.

Northwestern Web page causes free-speech stir

Should universities censor what gets put on their Web pages? The University of Michigan has always had a clear stance on this issue. "We do not censor," said Laurie Burns, associate director at the Information Technology Division.

Alums donate $17.5 M for campus buildings

At December's board meeting, University regents learned that two University alums have pledged independent donations totaling $17.5 million to the $1 billion Campaign for Michigan. Dallas-based entrepreneur Sam Wyly has offered a donation of $10 million to the Business School to be used for the construction of a new building.

IASA conference to explore culture, 'dual identity': Politicians from India, U.S. legislature to speak

Sporting events and parties will not be on the minds of all students this weekend. Starting tonight, the Indian American Student Association will hold its first Annual Indian American Student Conference. Probir Mehta, vice president of the Michigan Student Assembly and a chair of the "Reflections - Looking Back ... Looking Ahead" conference, said the event is important for Indian students to understand and be aware of the problems they face.

MSA hosts new committee heads

In a meeting that saw a lot of unanimous voting, the retreat of this term's top vote-getter and the flipping of coins - the Michigan Student Assembly elected its committee and commission chairs for the spring term. The last meeting before break was filled with a large amount of agreement from assembly members as the election of 13 committee and commission chairs and five committee vice chairs took little more than half an hour.
