'U' mourns loss of theatre prof. in Comair crash

Bouquets of violet-colored daisies and delicate red roses adorned Betty Jean Jones' office door this weekend paying tribute to the accomplished 47-year-old associate Rackham dean and theatre professor who passed away in Thursday night's plane crash.

Jones was travelling from Cincinnati to Detroit Metropolitan Airport aboard Comair flight 3272 when the plane went down Thursday afternoon in Raisinville Township, about 30 miles south of Ann Arbor.

Service honors Sharangpani

Family and friends gathered together yesterday at the Bharatiya Temple in Troy to remember LSA senior Arati Sharangpani, whose life came to a tragic end Thursday afternoon when Comair flight 3272 crashed outside of Detroit. Sharangpani's close friends and relatives said they were touched by her personality.

RAISINVILLE TOWNSHIP (AP) - Investigators of the crash of a Detroit-bound commuter plane said yesterday that three controls meant to shut off the right engine and activate a fire extinguisher were found in the on position in the plane's wreckage.

Law School Associate Dean Kent Syverud will leave behind years of memories when he heads to Nashville, Tenn., to start his new job as dean of the Vanderbilt University Law School. Syverud, who accepted the position Dec. 20, said he thought hard about leaving the University, where he earned his bachelor's and law degrees, but said it "ended up seeming like the right thing to do."

The Ann Arbor Police Department is investigating the sexual assault charges alleged by a female LSA sophomore against two University students - her friend's housemate and an acquaintance.

Stabenow and Rivers fight for microloans
