A2 Folk Festival warms Hill: Evening of high spirits and good music is a success

Forget how snowy and cold it was on Saturday. Four-thousand folk music fans and supporters of the Ark did, and in return were treated to an outstanding evening of performances at the 20th Annual Ann Arbor Folk Festival at Hill Auditorium.

Venezuelan-style Lara plays at Borders, Pontiac

According to Nil Lara, "the whole thing is about celebrating life." Whether he plays in a small club like 7th House in Pontiac as he did Saturday night, or as a member of the touring HORDE festival last year, Lara knows how to keep his shows down-to-earth as they represent his attitude toward maintaining a logical perspective of life.

Gray moves mountains with 'Slope'

Don't think for a minute that Spalding Gray is unaware of the irony of turning his life into art; the man does not take an unironic breath. One of the major crises in his latest monologue, "It's a Slippery Slope," is Gray's desire to have an actual private life. "I'm tired of being a vicarian," he confided to the packed Michigan Theater. "I want to live a life, not tell one!"

Allen's 'Everyone' tries too hard to find love

Woody Allen may believe in his little, troubled heart that "Everyone Says I Love You." After seeing his wildly uneven musical comedy, however, love isn't exactly what springs to mind. Starring a sublime ensemble led by Goldie Hawn, Julia Roberts and Drew Barrymore, "Everyone" leads audiences through many emotions and sensations, trying too hard to be loved.
