'U' awaits first NCAA certication
The University today plans to enter the final stage of a laborious 16-month process of applying for its first NCAA certification.
A five-member visiting committee, composed of members from peer institutions is scheduled to spend the next few days visiting campus, before making a recommendation about the University's future with the NCAA.

Former 'U' golfer to give $2.6M to Athletic Department today
John Schroeder, a professional and former Michigan All-American golfer, will present the University Athletic Department with a donation of $2.6 million today to support a career counseling program.
Joe Roberson, director of athletics, said the donation will benefit student athletes by preparing them to compete in the workforce.
Cohen announces policy endorsement
WASHINGTON (AP) - Defense Secretary William Cohen said yesterday he will carry out administration policies on missile defense and gays and women in the military while, as a former Republican senator, working to bring the GOP-led Congress on board.
Cohen, who took office on Friday, also urged the Senate to ratify a treaty banning chemical weapons, saying failure to join other countries in the international convention could isolate the nation and result in serious economic losses.
Award recipient to lecture on statuettes
Classical studies Prof. John Pedley - the 21st Distinguished Senior Faculty Lecturer award recipient - plans to speak tomorrow about a monumental excavation that almost was ruined by a tomato paste factory.
Pedley will talk about this University discovery at 4:15 p.m. tomorrow in the Rackham Amphitheater during his lecture titled "Flighty Aphrodites: A Group of Marble Statuettes from Paestum, Italy."
