Bargaining rip: 'U' contract offer is unfair to employees

Home to medical students, patients and doctors, the University Medical Center is the hub for medical care in Washtenaw County. Like many medical institutions, the center is in the process of significant budget cutbacks to make itself more attractive to managed care companies.

Open highway: CDA violated First Amendment

More than a year ago, the U.S. Congress passed the Telecommunications Act of 1996, rewriting many of the nation's communication laws. Tacked to this bill was a section called the Communications Decency Act, which placed bans on pornography transmitted over the Internet and set penalties for those convicted of distributing "indecent" sexual material to minors.

The doctor is out: State must not enact assisted suicide ban

Thomas Jefferson said certain truths were self-evident -- namely, that all people were created equal and have certain inalienable rights: "Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness." But what should be done when these rights conflict with one another? In the matter of assisted suicide, the traditional ideas about preservation of life conflict directly with the pursuit of happiness, or rather, with ending an individual's suffering.

Where have all the good summer films gone?

Once upon a time, in a galaxy far, far away, going to a movie theater was an enjoyable experience. Amidst overpriced popcorn and frigid air conditioning, movie theaters were a place where you can see a movie and stuff your face with butter substitute.

Roswell shows the public distrust of the government

Fifty years ago, something crash-landed near Roswell, N.M. The only question now is exactly what it was. After years of denials, the government has finally acknowledged that something was recovered from the New Mexican desert; the official story is that it was a military test plane. The "bodies" found near the craft weren't dead aliens but only hairless, three-foot-tall crash test dummies.
