Art fair begins today: A2 prepares for crowds
Many of Ann Arbor's normal functions will come to a halt this week when the annual art fairs roll into town again, marking 38 years of an Ann Arbor summer tradition.
Running today through Saturday, the three different fairs will cover 24 blocks of Ann Arbor streets, from downtown to the University campus. They bring with them more than 1,000 visual artists, numerous performance artists, merchants and food vendors.
State allocates $315 M to 'U'
The Michigan State House and Senate passed an appropriations bill that increased funding for state universities by $64 million on July 3.
"We're very pleased," said associate Vice President for University Relations Cynthia Wilbanks. This year the University will receive $315 million, $12 million more than it received the year before.
Clinton nominates Gramlich to Fed
After months of rumors and speculation President Clinton nominated Public Policy Dean Edward Gramlich to the Federal Reserve board on Thursday.
The Fed, which has been dubbed the "all-star team" for economists, is responsible for establishing national fiscal operation and determining interest rates.
'U' faculty deem Mars expedition 'dynamite'
The buzz from the Martian rover exploration - which many people consider the biggest breakthrough on the star-spangled final frontier since the Apollo moon landing - has permeated the University.
"(It's) absolutely fabulous. Dynamite," said Astronomy Prof. Pat Seitzer, echoing the elation that many members of the astronomy community feel toward the mission.
'U' Dems. attend national convention
At the College Democrats' national convention last weekend, University students had the chance to rub elbows with some of Washington's most powerful movers and shakers.
A delegation of eight students from colleges throughout Michigan made the trek to Washington, D.C., meeting up with University CDs who are interning in the capital for the summer.
Panel discusses women's health
Three experts in the field of women's health came together on Monday evening to bring attention to a problem plaguing American women - the lack of research in women's health.
The audience of about 60, consisting mostly of professors and graduate students, sat attentively in Rackham Auditorium as speakers addressed the difficulties of studying women's health. The public event was titled "Future Challenges in Women's Health - Three Perspectives.
Woman abducted from Med. Center: Suspect captured Monday
Former University Hospital employee Donald Dean Reeds, Jr. was arrested at 7:15 p.m. Monday for the kidnapping of and assault with intent to murder his estranged wife.
Both charges carry possible life-sentence penalties.
Bollinger creates new post, names chief of staff
University President Lee Bollinger, in an effort to organize his office, has created a new administrative position.
Chacona Johnson, the University's director of principal gifts in the Department of Development, has been named chief of staff by Bollinger.
