Beneficial budget: '97-'98 budget helps students, faculty

All in all, last week was good for students and faculty alike. The University Board of Regents approved a budget containing the lowest tuition increase in more than 10 years. Perhaps of more interest to future classes, the regents approved measures conducive to building and retaining excellence among the University's academic units.

Relationship problems: 'U' must examine faculty-business relations

Last Wednesday, the University's chief urologist, Dr. Joseph Oesterling, resigned in response to allegations of financial improprieties and a request from the University. Such predicaments are unavoidable even under the highest level of scrutiny.

Fight to the death: NEA supports community development

Paintings, concerts, theatre productions and touring exhibits are in trouble. After last year's significant reduction to the National Endowment for the Arts' budget, the U.S. House slimly voted to cut off all funding to the NEA last week. It's not that I am that critical or have really high standards - anybody who has read this column for the past couple of months or seen the way I dress can vouch for that.
