UHS aids students' medical concerns

Hot chicken soup and a mother's pampering will cure anything - at least, that's how it was living at home.

But what can students do at college?

Located on Fletcher Street, University Health Service offers a variety of outpatient services to University students, both part-time and full-time, who are in need of medical care.

Excluding emergency life-threatening situations, UHS's licensed medical practitioners are prepared to handle everything from the common cold to a sprained wrist.

"It's very comprehensive," said UHS Director Caesar Briefer. "We have, in addition to a general medical clinic, a gynecology clinic, we have rheumatology, ophthalmology, optometry, orthopedic, sports medicine, neurology, otolaryngology, allergy/immunization for travel, physical therapy, as well as many more."

While it is preferred that students book appointments before coming to UHS, walk-in service is available for students who check in at the urgent care desk in the lobby.

Kinesiology senior Andy Galbreath feels that the services and facilities at UHS are efficient.

"(UHS) is very much convenient," Galbreath said. "You can get in quick, and everything is handled well. The (physician assistants) and nurses have always been competent."

In addition to the medical services offered by UHS, there is also a pharmacy where students can fill prescriptions immediately following their visits.

"Prescriptions that the physicians or clinicians write here can be filled at the UHS pharmacy or anywhere else," Briefer said. "Outside prescriptions can also be filled at the UHS."

LSA junior Amourie Griffith said that although UHS is beneficial to students, she has a few complaints with the pharmacy's service.

"(The staff) is pretty efficient with their care," Griffith said. "(However,) I found that with the pharmacy, certain drugs were generic. I felt that I wasn't getting my money's worth."

Invasion of privacy, which may be concern to some students, is strictly prohibited under UHS policies.

"This operates like any other medical facility," Briefer said. "Unless the student is a minor, their medical records cannot be released without their written permission."

Briefer said that, luckily for students, the cost of most UHS services is covered by the Health Service Fee, which is automatically included in students' tuition.

"Everything except pharmaceuticals, certain immunizations, orthopedic devices, that sort of thing, are covered."
