Medical School ranks in nation's top 10
The University's School of Medicine is among the top 10 research-oriented medical schools in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report's annual graduate school survey.
"Overall, we're viewed as a very strong research institution," said Dr. Lorris Betz, interim dean of the Medical School.
Gunman opens fire during bank holdup
DETROIT (AP) - A man dressed in camouflage announced a holdup at a bank yesterday, fatally shot two people and wounded another - then ordered everyone else inside to join him in singing the Lord's Prayer as he yelled obscenities.
The gunman then left the bank, took an elderly man hostage, pushed him to the ground and fatally shot him in the head, Police Chief Isaiah McKinnon said. Police surrounding the bank then shot the gunman dead.
Bollinger picks 'U' interim attorneys: Board of Regents to hear announcement at tomorrow's meeting
The regents will take a road trip 30 miles northeast to the University's Dearborn campus tomorrow for their monthly meeting, where they will vote on University President Lee Bollinger's candidates for interim general counsel.
Bollinger has nominated Elizabeth Barry and Daniel Sharphorn to share the University's top attorney position until a permanent successor to Elsa Cole is named.

Senate agrees to funding probe: Unanimous vote expands campaign financing investigation
WASHINGTON (AP) - In a turnabout prompted by defections among their own, Senate Republicans agreed yesterday to a broader investigation of campaign financing that would include huge donations that aren't necessarily illegal.
On a pair of 99-0 votes, the Senate voted to expand the reach of the investigation and appropriate $4.35 million to cover its costs. Sen. Christopher Dodd (D-Conn.) voted present on both votes, citing his co-chairmanship of the Democratic National Committee the past two years.
MSA clarifies its own rules with resolution
Michigan Student Assembly members approved a change to their governing code last night that calls for a provision they thought already existed.
The assembly endorsed a measure stating that both its executive officers and the MSA administrative coordinator can authorize "regular and periodic" disbursements of up to $250 from the assembly's Operations account to purchase office supplies. The resolution also states that disbursements can be made without immediate assembly approval.

Area anti-gay crimes may be on the rise
DETROIT (AP) - The number of gays who reported they were verbally or physically attacked in the metropolitan Detroit area because of their sexual preference increased 29 percent in 1996, a gay rights group reported yesterday.
The Triangle Foundation reports that it received 116 cases of anti-gay violence last year, compared with 90 cases a year earlier.

Shared-responsibility bill clears state Senate, 37-0
LANSING (AP) - Children of divorced parents could find themselves splitting their time more evenly between their parents under a bill that assumes that shared parental responsibility should be ordered.
The bill, similar to one that passed the Senate in the last session but failed to clear the House, passed the Senate yesterday. Sponsored by Sen. Joel Gougeon (R-Bay City), the bill was sent to the House on a 37-0 vote.
Potential liver for transplant located
A donor liver was being flown in yesterday with the hope that it would be compatible for a 17-year-old girl comatose with a rare liver disease, a University Hospitals spokesperson said.

Disease adds risk for flood victims
FALMOUTH, Ky. (AP) - Flood victims trying to rebuild their lives are confronting a host of new threats as the waters recede - disease from the filthy muck, injury from wobbly buildings and bites from poisonous snakes.
Those going back into towns flooded by the Ohio River and its tributaries were told to get tetanus shots to protect them against floodwaters fouled with human and animal waste picked up from fields, sewage plants and backed-up sewers.
