Harrick accepts UCLA's offer: Former Bruins men's basketball coach will not sue university

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Jim Harrick, fired as UCLA basketball coach for lying about an expense report, has accepted the school's offer to settle the remaining four years of his contract and will not sue, Athletic Director Peter Dalis said.

Blaney fired from the Hall

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (AP) - George Blaney was fired as Seton Hall's basketball coach and athletic director Larry Keating resigned Monday, less than a week after the team finished its second straight losing season. Keating's resignation was submitted only after he refused a directive from the university president to fire Blaney, who was hired three years ago after P.J. Carlesimo left to coach the Portland Trail Blazers.

Army joins Conference USA; Navy only independent academy

WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) - After more than a century as an independent, Army broke with tradition on Monday and joined Conference USA. Army will begin conference play in 1998, giving the league eight teams. Cincinnati, Houston, Louisville, Memphis, Southern Mississippi and Tulane are the current members, with East Carolina to begin play this fall.
