Originally from Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England, Paul left home at the age of 18 to join the crew of a 70-foot ketch. He subsequently sailed to Germany, Holland and France. At the age of 21, he moved to London, where he met a woman, followed her home to Michigan, and married her. They now live happily in Newport, MI.
