Here we go again: Blue gets surprise draw in NCAAs

Uh-oh. Michigan received expected news yesterday. The Wolverines were not surprised when it was announced they had received the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye in the West Regional of the NCAA hockey tournament.

Revenge is sweet in finale

DETROIT - Go ahead and cross Michigan State off the teams-Michigan-owes list. The Wolverines are indebted to the Spartans no longer. The Michigan hockey team used revenge as a motive and won its second consecutive CCHA playoff championship by defeating Michigan State, 3-1, before 19,032 at Joe Louis Arena on Saturday night. Michigan had advanced to the final by dispatching Bowling Green, 7-2, the night before.

'M' football shorthanded this spring: Lack of lineman worries Carr; QBs to compete

Colorado. Notre Dame. Iowa. Penn State. Ohio State. Five good reasons to believe that the Michigan football team could be in for a long season.

'M' beats up on Utah State: Simes scores perfect 10 on vault in season's final meet

You went and saved the best for last. Those may be merely the lyrics to a cheesy love song, but fans of Michigan women's gymnast Lisa Simes were probably singing them all night long after Saturday evening's 196.8-195.45 thrashing of Utah State.

Wake, Duke upset victims

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Derrick Brown gave the Providence Friars a huge assist Sunday - with his most points ever. The senior forward helped the Friars overcome foul trouble by Austin Croshere with a 33-point performance that sent Providence to a 98-87 victory over Duke in Yesterday's second round of the NCAA tournament's Southeast Regional.

'M' netters don't scare anybody yet, but new facility will surely help

The University of Michigan Varsity Tennis Center is a sight to behold. Nestled deep into the hills off South State Street, the two large, dark green buildings emble a fortress.

Blue women's tennis defeats Illini

The Michigan women's tennis team returned home from a difficult spring break tour to maintain a perfect 3-0 conference record with a 6-1 win over Illinois in Ann Arbor yesterday. The Wolverines were led by senior Sarah Cyganiak who took home two victories, snagging a singles win against the Illini's Stacy Shapiro, 6-0, 6-2, and a doubles win with partner Sora Moon. Cyganiak is now 88-43 in her singles career.

Minnesota tames Temple zone; Chattanooga knocks off Illinois

KANSAS CITY (AP) - Sam Jacobson hit four of Minnesota's 10 zone-busting 3-pointers and the top-seeded Gophers cruised past No. 9 seed Temple, 76-57. The Gophers (29-3) did exactly what they promised against the feared matchup zone of Temple, which held Mississippi to a Midwest Regional-record low of 40 points in the first round.

Kansas eliminates Purdue; Iowa State beats Cincy

Memphis (AP) - Paul Pierce scored 20 points and made big plays with the game in the balance as the top-seeded Jayhawks (34-1) advanced to the regional semifinals for the fifth straight year. Kansas beat Purdue 75-61. Pierce pulled down 12 rebounds and stepped up after Purdue, trailing by 10 at halftime, edged in front by a point with 9:58 to play.

Smith breaks win record, surpasses Rupp

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - They came from near and far to cheer their coach on his extraordinary day. Minutes after breaking the record as the winningest basketball coach in NCAA history, Dean Smith hurried off the court and ran a gauntlet of former players in the hallway outside the locker room.

Alban stones Wolverines, equals Morrison's play

DETROIT - Despite being voted the CCHA tournament's Most Valuable Player by the media, Michigan captain Brendan Morrison was not a cut-and-dry choice. While Morrison netted two goals and three assists on the weekend, including the championship game-winner over Michigan State, the guy who may have done more for his team over the weekend was Michigan State goaltender Chad Alban.

'M' passes first real test, but rough road awaits

DETROIT - By now, winning the CCHA playoff title should feel as commonplace as waking up and going to class for the Michigan hockey team. The Wolverines have won the postseason trophy three of the past four seasons and two years in a row after Saturday's 3-1 victory over Michigan State.

Joe Louis: Michigan's home away from home

DETROIT - Although his traditional post-game cup of coffee was replaced by a fruit drink after Michigan's championship-game victory, the joe was ever-present for Michigan coach Red Berenson and his team this season. The nine games Michigan played at Joe Louis Arena were more than any previous season, and the results clearly showed the Wolverines' affinity for the building.

Cornell beats Clarkson in surprise ECAC playoff

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. - Cornell's second season has once again paid dividends. The Big Red knocked off Clarkson, the No. 2 team in the country, 2-1, to capture its second straight ECAC title.

Michigan's win streak snapped by Kansas State

With an eight-game wining streak on the line, the No. 30 Michigan baseball team headed down to Tulsa for the F & M Bank Classic this weekend. Although the Wolverines (9-5) knocked off Oral Roberts (14-6) to extend the streak to nine Friday, Kansas State put a halt to their winning ways with a 9-6 victory Saturday. Pepperdine forced Michigan's new streak, a losing one, to two with an 8-7 victory over the Wolverines on Sunday.

Old Dominion holds off Purdue

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - Distraught over missing a layup that would have won the game, Mery Andrade was determined to make amends. She did.

'M' softball experiences rough time in Florida

The first day back in Florida was hardly a happy reunion for the No. 6 Michigan softball team and the Sunshine State. After performing well over break at the Speedline Invitational in Tampa, the Wolverines did not find the same success at the Lady Seminole Invitational in Tallahassee.

'M' tennis chalks weekend up to 'experience'

It's always difficult to get back into the swing of things after spring break. Just ask the Michigan men's tennis team. Despite staying busy with a series of dual meets over the vacation, the 30th-ranked Wolverines dropped three disappointing matches this weekend at the Blue-Gray Classic in Montgomery, Ala. Michigan was unable to come away with a victory, losing the three matches by a combined four points.

Blue tumblers improve, but not enough to douse Flames

No matter how hard it tries, the Michigan men's gymnastics team just can't seem to beat anybody in two-team, head-to-head competitions. Friday's 223.625-222.1 loss to Illinois-Chicago sent the yearlong tailspin to an 0-6 dual meet record.

Wilmot dives to surprising first place

Big Ten swimming has seen its share of upset performers. Minnesota's Big Ten championship in 1996 was big. But it may not compare to the events at the Zone I diving meet this weekend. Michigan sophomore Brett Wilmot won the ten-meter platform event at the meet. Wilmot and the rest of the Wolverines were just hoping to qualify a diver in the top three in any of the three diving competitions.
