MSA votes to limit candidate spending

Michigan Student Assembly members proved last night that campaign finance reform is not limited to the national level. At their weekly meeting, assembly members passed a proposal that will cap MSA candidate campaign spending at $500 beginning this fall. After the resolution passed, LSA Rep. Dan Serota said he plans to sue MSA over the legality of the code changes.

Resume service offers help in job searches

University Opportunity Network, a new online resume service exclusively for University students, will have a promotional event from 5 to 9 p.m. tonight at Java House on South University Avenue. Federal Reserve raises interest rates

WASHINGTON - The Federal Reserve nudged interest rates higher yesterday for the first time in two years, hoping to stifle any threat of rising inflation. Banks immediately began raising the rates paid by millions of Americans.

Analysts suggested the Fed's quarter-point increase was not the end of the story, with two or three more boosts likely by the end of the year to slow the surprisingly strong economy.

Women deans share their triumphs, troubles at forum

When Edie Goldenberg was asked to become a candidate for LSA dean in 1989, she responded with a "no thanks" and hung up the phone. But serendipity fused with a determination to pursue paths she liked most led her to reconsider her initial refusal. She has now served as the LSA dean for eight years.

'U' seeks director for Media Union

A newly formed committee of University officials is looking to find a director for the Media Union, which opened a year ago. "It is really important that the person has proven and demonstrated ... leadership in an interdisciplinary academic setting," said Engineering Dean Stephen Director. "The Media Union is a strong symbol that the University is committed to this concept.

Bone marrow drive targets minorities

Students can register to save someone's life at this week's minority bone marrow drive. The drive is a three-day event aimed at registering minority students as donors for the National Marrow Donor Registry.

State Senate approves three spending bills

LANSING (AP) - The state Senate continued work yesterday on a spending plan for next year, sending three budget bills to the House for its approval. About $1.1 billion in general fund spending for the Family Independence Agency for the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1, was approved 36-2.
