The Michigan women's tennis team was happy with their sweep of Michigan State and Purdue this past weekend in Ann Arbor, but its next two matches have much more going for the Wolverines in terms of scenery.
Michigan will travel to the Sunshine State this weekend to face the Miami and then travel up to Tampa to face South Florida.
The good part of this trip: a weekend in Florida.
The rough part of this trip: both matches will be outdoors and the Wolverines have only done that three times this season.
"After our trip to California, we'll be ready for the matches in Florida," said Michigan coach Bitsy Ritt.
The Wolverines fared pretty well out west, winning two of their three matches in the sun. But that was almost a month ago and they have been confined to indoor matches ever since.
Despite being locked up for most of the season, Michigan is playing extremely well. Their overall record is now 8-3 and they stand atop the Big Ten with a 5-0 record. Also, they have moved up in the national rankings to No. 18.
About the hardest thing for the Wolverines so far has been pinpointing where there success is coming from. With one senior, one junior, one sophomore and a herd of freshmen on the team, they have had major contributions from everyone.
Leading the team in victories at this point are senior Sarah Cyganiak and freshman Brooke Hart - both are 5-0 in conference play.
Cyganiak's performance this season has catapulted her from the depths of the preseason rankings to No. 49 in the nation.
Sophomore Tumeka Harris and freshmen Danielle Lund and Eryn Weggenman all sport a 4-1 record in conference play.
All three of Michigan's doubles teams are 4-1 in the Big Ten.
The Wolverines are seemingly solid all the way through their line-up and it is that depth that could get them through their trip to Florida.
"I think it comes down to how well we adjust to playing outdoors," Ritt said.
