Morrison wins Hobey Baker Award

MILWAUKEE - Friday was not a normal day for the captain of the Michigan hockey team, Brendan Morrison. He had been told the night before that he would be honored with the Hobey Baker Award - presented annually since 1981 to the nation's top collegiate hockey player.

Christians celebrate Easter holiday

Two thousand years after the Gospels recorded stories of the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth, Christians around the world continue to celebrate Easter. Easter originated from the Gospels' account of Jesus' resurrection after death by crucifixion. The belief that Jesus ascended to heaven and returned after death is a fundamental doctrine in Christian religion.

Cult suicide site may be destroyed

RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. - As coroners completed the grim task of examining the bodies of 39 cult members who died in mass suicide here, a real estate agent said yesterday that two wealthy businessmen have offered to buy and raze the mansion in Rancho Santa Fe where the deaths took place.

Violent clashes continue in West Bank

NABLUS, West Bank - Palestinian demonstrators clashed with Israeli forces throughout the West Bank yesterday, but Palestinian police intervened to contain the violence. In most of the West Bank cities, Palestinian youths burned tires and threw stones at Israeli troops guarding Jewish shrines. Scores of protesters were treated for rubber-bullet wounds and tear-gas inhalation, but there were none of the feared fatalities.

Gingrich concludes 3-day visit to China: House speaker expresses enthusiasm for China's future

SHANGHAI, China - House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who only a year ago was accusing the Chinese government of "terrorism" in the Taiwan Strait, bubbled with enthusiasm for China's leadership, its economy, its history and its promise as he concluded a three-day visit here yesterday with 11 other members of Congress in tow.

New measures aim to 'get tough' on crime

LANSING (AP) - For prisoners and convicted felons in Michigan, the new laws coming on the books this week pack a particularly stiff punch. Others will be squeezed by the new laws as well, from abortion providers to high-tech criminals, truckers, drunk drivers, animal abusers and those who scare anyone in a nursing home. Even people who sneak cable TV service into their homes without paying for it will feel the laws' bite.

Ford says GOP needs to move to center of spectrum

DETROIT (AP) - Former President Gerald Ford says the current occupants of the White House have abused its status for political donations, and believes Republicans need to move toward the nation's political center.

Finance reform proposed

MIDLAND (AP) - A state representative says the only way to control campaign spending is with public funding, and plans to introduce three bills to put such a system in place in Michigan.
