Piersma takes home two NCAA championships

MINNEAPOLIS - Blonds really do have more fun. That old saying defined the 74th annual NCAA men's swimming and diving championships, as blond-dyed Auburn took home its first-ever title with 496.5 points. After the first day, the only question remaining was who would fill out the top five.

Super Sioux topple Terriers, 6-4, for title

MILWAUKEE - The Fighting Sioux hadn't been in the NCAA championship game in 10 years, and it wasn't an easy trip back. They spent Tuesday night in a Minneapolis airport, stranded, after a plane ran off the runway, delaying their flight.

Seniors special for staying, despite loss

MILWAUKEE - The weekend didn't go as planned for Brendan Morrison and Jason Botterill, or any of the other nine seniors on the Michigan hockey team. This wasn't the way their careers were supposed to end. Not like this.

A perfect match: Morrison and Hobey

MILWAUKEE - Something happens when you mention the name Brendan Morrison in the middle of a conversation with fellow Michigan hockey player Mike Legg. A sense of awe overtakes Legg.

'M' hitters tame Lions' roar

It's Miller time. With the Michigan baseball team trailing Penn State, 4-3, yesterday in the bottom of the seventh inning, catcher Andrew Miller stepped up to the plate with two men on base.

NCAAs will be a defensive cat fight

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Get the VCRs ready. The pace of the NCAA title game promises to be so fast you might need to watch it in slow motion to catch it all.

'M' women's track finds tough competition at Raleigh Relays

Last week, Michigan women's track coach James Henry said that his team needed to face better competition. At this weekend's Raleigh Relays, he got it.

Despite "down" time, 'M' great moments exist

So, you seniors are about to graduate, aren't you? That means it's time for me to present to you ... drum roll, please ... the class of 1997's five greatest moments in Michigan sports! Of course, I know that besides hockey it's been a "down" four years for Michigan. But if a "down" four years in football means a record of 33-16, what does it mean at Purdue? 0-44?

'M' crew splits first varsity meet

The Michigan women's crew team had a solid start Saturday in its first official meet as a varsity team when it defeated George Washington but fell to Virginia at Charlottesville, Va. The Wolverines beat George Washington with all four crews racing.

It's not a total failure, but Blue's season doesn't pass with flying colors

NEW YORK - Is it possible to win a postseason championship and still be considered a failure? Is it possible to win 24 games and be labeled an underachiever?

Both Wildcats win in Final Four

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - When Ron Mercer was in the game, his shots weren't falling. When he was out, his cramping legs were on ice. That combination should have had Kentucky in a bad way. Instead, the Wildcats will get a chance to defend their national title.

Vols win physical game vs. Monarchs

CINCINNATI (AP) - Tennessee won yet another national championship, and this one might have been the toughest - and most bruising - of all. Shackling Old Dominion with aggressive, physical defense, Tennessee weathered a second-half comeback and beat the Lady Monarchs, 68-59, last night to win its second straight national championship in women's basketball and fifth overall.

Four 'M' All-Americans named

MILWAUKEE - On the edge of the Bradley's Center's upper deck Saturday, a blue sheet was adorned with the slogan "Hobey Baker - No. 9." While Michigan center Brendan Morrison's Hobey Baker Award on Friday was undoubtedly the highlight of a disappointing weekend for the Wolverines, Morrison was not the only Michigan player honored.

Michigan softball sweeps past Badgers

The Michigan softball team (3-0 Big Ten, 28-8-1 overall) might not have been able to beat Wisconsin (0-3, 14-11) in touch football, but they didn't have any trouble winning some softball games this weekend. After a short rain delay yesterday in which the Badgers beat Michigan in a playful game of touch football, 21-7, the Wolverines completed their three-game sweep of Wisconsin - winning the softball games, in routs of 7-3, 7-1 and 10-1.

Tennis improves streak

In the first match at their new complex, the Michigan men's tennis team left their opponents in the dark. Literally. A two-hour power outage almost delayed the start of Michigan's Saturday match against Ohio State. It was the Wolverines, however, who came out charged for the weekend, shutting out the Buckeyes, 7-0, and winning a nail- biter, 4-3, over Indiana.

Preseason losses jump up to bite swimmers

MINNEAPOLIS- Seventh place was hardly heaven for the Michigan men's swimming and diving team this weekend. The finish was the lowest for the Wolverines since 1992, when Michigan came in 10th place. In fact, before this season, the Wolverines were the only school to place in the top three at the NCAAs during the past four seasons.

Senior leadership key to Michigan tankers' success

MINNEAPOLIS - Leadership is not that important in such an individual sport as swimming. Yes, the team score is the bottom line, but individual scores dictate team performance. If coach Jon Urbanchek read that paragraph by itself, he would laugh out loud. The performances of strong individuals ease the nerves for the rest of the team.
