Tipoff '97 Feature Articles

The 'next Fab Five?' Three years later, that's still unfair

It was unfair from the very beginning. Everything about them mentioned their potential, their talent, their future. The things they would do for Michigan basketball were limitless, people said. That potential. That youth.

Guards will miss Conlan early

Would-be, out-of-shape intramural point guards all over campus just have to be kicking themselves. An already-thin backcourt just got a whole lot thinner for Michigan, after floor leader Travis Conlan fractured his right wrist in the team's first exhibition game of the season.

Forward, march! 'M' frontcourt rivals Big Ten's best

Maybe the coach's whistle at practice will intensify the message to senior forward Maceo Baston. Michigan coach Brian Ellerbe has been animated in practices, trying to get the Wolverines to understand the importance of being aggressive on the court. With one of the most imposing bodies in the Big Ten - 6-foot-8, 300-pound Robert Traylor - and one with a wingspan equivalent to that of 7-foot-3 player - Baston - Michigan's starters make up one of the strongest frontcourts in the conference.

On a mission: New point guard Robbie Reid is out to prove he is Michigan's missing link

For all Robbie Reid knew, the sounds from the surrounding citizens were gibberish. The native tongue of Greece was foreign to the Utah-raised Reid. But he was a quick learner. There was little doubt about his ability to eventually adapt to a new language, but this situation was more intense than five afternoons in a foreign language class - it was an entirely new culture.

Pulling the load: Robert Traylor came to Michigan to play basketball.

There he was. An intimidating figure of monstrous proportions. Six feet, and eight inches, totaling 300 pounds of human flesh, standing tall and strong. Nothing could hurt him. And yet there he was, escaping the room, in tears. At the podium was his coach - his former coach, that is.

A United venture?: Despite dissent, the Big Ten will host its first men's basketball tournament this season

Since its inception in 1894, the Big Ten conference has maintained a precedent of selectivity. As the NCAA's most financially successful organization of schools, the Big Ten holds the power to admit members as it chooses instead of as necessity dictates.
