Trojans under fire

LOS ANGELES (U-WIRE) - Former Student Athlete Athletic Services tutor Stephanie Babcock shed new light Wednesday on statements made in the media about improprieties in the Southern Cal tutoring program.

Babcock, who left SAAS in September, clarified information that ran in Monday's Los Angeles Times and Tuesday's Daily Trojan, as well as information from Wednesday's Orange County Register and Los Angeles Daily News.

Babcock said that three athletes, not 10, approached her with offers of money in exchange for writing anthropology papers for them.

She also said that the amounts offered were $20, $40 and a stipend check of indeterminate size, not $200, $400 and $500, as was reported earlier.

Babcock said that the only people to whom she has mentioned the names of the three athletes are those serving on the investigating committee that is looking into alleged improper behavior at SAAS.

The Daily News, in Wednesday's edition, named freshman defensive end Sultan Abdul-Malik as one of the players who offered Babcock money.

Babcock would not comment as to whether or not Abdul-Malik offered her money.

She also addressed reports concerning sophomore wide receiver R. Jay Soward. The Register reported that she had tried to get Soward to work on a paper, on which he ended up getting an A.

Soward claimed in the story that he did not know her.

Babcock said that Soward is not one of the three athletes who offered her money, and that he probably knows her by face, not by name.
