'M' spikers wake up, sweep 'Cats: Blue improves to 3-0 in Big Ten

For the first five minutes, the Michigan volleyball team struggled. Then, the Wolverines woke up and routed a sloppy Northwestern team, 15-11, 15-7, 15-11. After two Northwestern points and 14 side outs, the Wolverines (3-0 Big Ten, 10-4 overall) finally got on the board - and they did it in style, scoring seven of the next eight points.

Wolverines overcome mistakes, adversity to shine

The measure of a good team is not how much talent its has, but how it overcomes mistakes and adversity. Mistakes and adversity have been a common mantra for the Michigan volleyball team under coach Greg Giovanazzi. But last night's three-game sweep of Northwestern has the Wolverines sporting a 3-0 conference start and alone in first place in the Big Ten.

Women's golf fights the blues at home

Michigan women's golf coach Kathy Teichert hopes there's no place like home for the Wolverines. After two tournaments, Teichert hasn't been pleased with what she's seen. "Right now our freshman and upper classmen are not really coming through to where I'd like to see them be," Teichert said. "If that continues to happen, we'll have trouble being competitive."

The Michigan men's tennis team has a new luxurious facility, a veteran team and a full summer of practice behind it. Now all that is left for the Wolverines is to go out and dominate. In their 101st season, the Wolverines will get their first chance when they compete at the North Carolina Tar Heel Invitational this weekend in Chapel Hill. Michigan, in its third visit to the tournament in as many years, will be facing some of the toughest competition in the nation.

Last year the Michigan women's tennis team completed its most illustrious season in history. The Wolverines worked their way to a record of 21-5, including a 12-match unbeaten streak, a perfect 10-0 in the Big Ten and a 7-0 record at Michigan's new Tisch Tennis Center.

Soccer faces toughest conference battles

The Michigan women's soccer team has been grabbing constant headlines the past three weeks. The Wolverines are riding a seven-match winning streak, propelling Michigan to its best start in program history. But all that will mean very little if the Wolverines don't win at least one of two Big Ten matchups this weekend. Michigan (4-0 Big Ten, 9-1 overall) travels to Minnesota on Friday and Penn State on Sunday for a couple of key matches. The Wolverines, Golden Gophers and Nittany Lions are all undefeated and share first place in the conference.

After weeks of anticipation, the first full set of Big Ten games kicks off this Saturday. The Big Ten's play in the early part of the season has marked it as one of the premier conferences in the nation.
