Caffeine attracts those who long for a quick energy jolt

What does a double mocha latte have that attracts a stressed-out college student? Caffeine - our best friend when our bodies need sleep and we want to stay awake. Caffeine is a plant product that is most commonly found in coffee, tea and soft drinks. According to University Health Services, its effects can begin as soon as 15 minutes after consumption and can last up to six hours.

Midterms attack 'u': Students search for the perfect studying environment

It's Fall. And beyond the walls of academia, leaves are changing colors and floating blithely through the air. But within, the air is filled more with stress - the scent of coffee-filled cups after coffee cup and various expletives. Ahh, Fall. Or, rather, as college students have come to know it, midterms.

Exam-time stress assails campus

"You get one shot. Two hours and it's over," said Joe Zawacki, an Engineering junior. His words sum up about every exam students take at the University - exam time is crunch time for everyone. What makes exams so bad, worse than even research papers and engineering design projects? Jessica Beiler, an LSA junior, said, "If you work hard on a paper you know you'll do better, but with exams, you don't know what to expect."

Bentley Library preserves history

"You bulls are the same, but the reason for this note is to praise the ability of Lt. Ron Leonard. He is one man should I ever be cornered, I wouldn't kill." - A letter stored in the Bentley Library, to Port Huron police, from infamous mobster John Dillinger.

Science-fiction programs inspire viewers' imaginations

"Do not adjust the picture, we are controlling transmission." With those words uttered more than 34 years ago, a brand-new age of television arrived on the scene: science fiction. The genre of sci-fi on television can be divided into several categories, from the serious ("The Outer Limits"), to the bizarre ("The Twilight Zone," "The X-Files"), the outrageous ("Mork and Mindy," "3rd Rock from the Sun") or to the spacefaring ("Star Trek," "Babylon 5").

Go ahead, make my day

I sat nervously on the dusty couch, waiting in the hallway outside the office door, in a situation many of us have faced - the dreaded job interview. There may be different circumstances - the couch could be a vinyl chair, the hallway could be conference room, the potential jobs could be different - but the experience is pretty much universal.

VH1 show reshapes music video concept

In the late 1970s, a brand-new way to deliver music to the public was born amidst the rise of punk rock and the fall of disco. This new form of broadcasting music introduced the world to the glam rockers and hair bands of the '80s. The name of this transformation was music video.

Indie film explores pot culture

For the uninitiated, High Times magazine is a hemp lover's dream: a publication devoted to the growing, selling and use of cannabis, that includes in its monthly layout a state-by-state drug price guide and photos of readers' pets with doobies in their snouts.

Come out, come out wherever you are

"We're here. We're queer. Get used to it." This is one of many catch phrases you may hear this week, this week of celebration, this week of tossing your inhibitions aside, this week of being yourself, this week of coming out.

Entertainment News: Conan and Letterman to release soundtracks

Chastity Bono, daughter of Sonny and Cher, and entertainment media director for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, is peeved that a new film about homosexual men living in Nazi Germany has been given the exclusive "NC-17" rating by the Motion Picture Association of America.
